XRP Ledger announced that it will achieve full anti-quantization by 2028. Leading the Ethereum Roadmap
The developer team of XRP Ledger (XRPL) has announced a plan to achieve full anti-quantization of the network by 2028. This move gives XRP Ledger a lead among major blockchain competitors vying for the same milestone. The message was confirmed by Vet, a contributor to the XRPL Foundation and a decentralized unique node list (dUNL) verifier.
Vet pointed out that significant progress is expected in 2027, including the initial deployment of new security protocols through hybrid systems. The newly disclosed timetable positions XRPL as a pioneer in protecting blockchain against potential threats to quantum computing, with its planned transition time a year ahead of Ethereum's scheduled upgrade in 2029.
Technical Strategies and Key Features of XRPL
Developers have highlighted three key architectural innovations that support the quantum security transition of XRPL:
First, native key rotation. This feature allows encryption keys to be updated without changing the user's existing r-address. This safe and seamless transition is expected to minimize confusion and operational risks for asset custodians. In contrast, most competing blockchains require users to manually transfer assets to new wallets when adopting post-quantum standards.
Second, XRPL and RippleX developers have established a "Quantum Day" Incident Response Service protocol. If rapid advances in quantum computing threaten current encryption schemes, the protocol allows vulnerable accounts to be immediately isolated and protected without disrupting the overall operation of the ledger.
Third, the network has begun to actively test anti-quantum encryption algorithms. Developers intend to gradually introduce new security measures, adopting a hybrid deployment approach that is parallel to existing protocols. This approach is designed to ensure strong protection while maintaining network stability during the transition phase.
Explanation of Terms: Decentralized Unique Node List (dUNL)
This is a decentralized list of trusted verifiers used in XRP Ledger to ensure agreement on the true state of the network and securely maintain consensus.
Significant anti-quantum security enhancements are expected to be achieved in 2027, when a hybrid deployment model will be launched to operate in parallel with the network's existing security architecture. This is designed to provide smoother transition and scalability for users and custodians.
Competition with Algorand and Comprehensive XRPL Audit
The race against quantization has renewed attention to the comparison between XRPL and Algorand. Algorand recently announced the development of a quantum-resistant account that leverages the Falcon-1024 signature, an encryption scheme that resists quantum computer attacks. However, Vet warned the community not to overestimate this achievement, pointing out that Algorand still relies heavily on the Ed 25519 standard in daily operations. The full integration of anti-quantum technologies, including consensus agreements, is not expected to be completed until 2027.

This is a post-quantum digital signature algorithm designed to withstand attacks from quantum computers.
Meanwhile, Ripple's "Project Eleven" project includes a comprehensive security audit of XRP Ledger, covering every component from verifier nodes to the underlying network infrastructure. The audit is part of a broader initiative to verify and update every security layer before the mainnet transitions to anti-quantization.
Ripple's release plan takes a phased approach, starting with comprehensive testing. It is planned to carry out a mixed deployment of legacy signatures and post-quantum signatures in 2027, followed by a comprehensive upgrade of the main network environment in 2028.
As an industry-leading strategy, XRP Ledger's transition roadmap combines hybrid encryption solutions, full-system audits, and responsive emergency protocols designed to respond to rapidly evolving quantum technology threats and protect user assets.
