stablecoins are not decentralized assets, they have never been. USDT and USDC are IOUs issued by private companies. Tether releases USDT and Circle releases USDC. Both companies maintain blacklists of addresses that cannot send or receive their tokens.
This is not a loophole, but a feature required by the regulatory framework. Circle and Tether operate under regulatory frameworks that require them to be able to freeze funds linked to illegal activities, violations of sanctions or court orders. In other words: The world's most widely used "cryptocurrency" assets have a centralized control mechanism built into it from the beginning.
The Bitget hacking incident has made this clear to those who have not paid attention to this fact. As $351 million flows through wallets controlled by Circle and Tether, these companies can decide in real time which addresses are blacklisted. They don't need a court order for an initial freeze or a blockchain consensus. They just need to make a decision and the flow of funds stops.
The irony is structural, not accidental.
What's really interesting is that the centralized freezing capabilities used by Circle and Tether this week are not mistakes or compromises, but the key to enabling stablecoins to function at institutional scale. Regulators need it, banks need it, and companies need it. If you want to integrate stablecoins into traditional finance, you must have the ability to freeze funds linked to crime, sanctions, or court orders. There is no other way.
Therefore, the cryptocurrency assets with the highest adoption rates are also the most centralized assets in design. The story of adoption is in direct conflict with the story of decentralization, and the story of adoption is winning.
USDC and USDT process US$46 trillion in transactions each year. They are critical infrastructure for global commerce. They are reliable because they are trusted by regulatory entities; they can be trusted because they have centralized control. The more popular mainstream cryptocurrency becomes, the more these controls are needed; the more these controls are needed, the less they are what they originally claim to be.
Who really controls your cryptocurrency
We need to understand exactly what "control" means in this context. If your positions are Bitcoin or Ethereum and are stored in a self-managed wallet, Circle and Tether cannot freeze them. The protocol is truly decentralized, and no one has a freeze key for native cryptographic assets.
However, if your position falls into the following circumstances:
- USDT or USDC in any wallet
- Any exchange account
- Any escrow product, including ETF
- Any wrapping or bridging token routed through regulated infrastructure
Then, Someone (or people) holds the freeze button in their hands. The way most people actually hold cryptocurrencies in 2026 means that most crypto assets can be frozen at a practical level, not just in theory.
In the Bitget hack incident, US$318,000 was immediately frozen, and the remaining US$351 million stayed on Ethereum. Because Ethereum is truly decentralized, it cannot be frozen. Hackers know this well, which is why most of the money is in ETH. Hackers have a deeper understanding of architecture than most users.
Decentralized maximalists 'silence
Whenever stablecoin issuers freeze wallets linked to apparent criminal activity, the crypto community responds the same way: "It's okay. They froze criminals 'funds and the system worked as expected."
On the surface, this is true. The $351 million hacking case is distressing, but freezing funds accessible to hackers is a good thing. But this argument is too broad. If Circle and Tether can freeze a hacker's wallet within hours because of their decision, they can freeze your wallet within hours. As long as someone decides to do it.
This ability is not limited to criminals. It is a universally applicable power, first applied to criminals because it is the least controversial use scenario. The question is not whether the power was used correctly this week, but who has it, under what conditions and with what supervision. The answer for 2026 is: two private companies, with limited external accountability based on their own terms of service. This is not a decentralized system, this is a different kind of centralized system that markets better.
What does this mean for cryptocurrency identity
If you believe that cryptocurrencies are designed to build truly decentralized alternatives to traditional finance, then Tether and Circle's ability to freeze is a betrayal of the founding premise. If you think that cryptocurrencies are designed to build faster, more convenient, and more global financial infrastructure, then the same freezing ability is a feature that makes the infrastructure credible enough for mainstream use.
Both positions are logically consistent. The problem is that the cryptocurrency industry has never honestly stated which one they are building. They promoted version 1, but built version 2. Events like this week's Bitget freeze make this gap impossible to ignore.
What should have been said this week
The correct description of what happened this week should not be "the system is working well", but rather: "Two companies exercised central control over the decentralized network to stop crime." In this particular case, this was the right decision. Let us have an honest dialogue on the meaning of this power, its holders, its conditions for use, and future governance."
This conversation did not happen. Instead, the industry celebrates the freeze as evidence that cryptocurrencies can respond to crime, without delving into the nature of the system implied by the freeze capabilities. The key question is: Should Circle and Tether have freezing capabilities? Under what governance structure? What kind of supervision is there? How to prevent abuse? What are the remedies for wrongful freezing? These questions are not abstract theories; they determine whether "decentralized finance" is a descriptive term or a marketing slogan.
