The MIDAS system and the path to 2027
ESMA plans to advance MIDAS, its centralized crypto market monitoring system, which is designed to monitor potential market abuses under the Cryptographic Asset Markets Regulation (MiCA). The first phase is expected to be fully operational in 2027, while the second phase plans to add analytical functions and expand data types, and will be launched in the fourth quarter after approval by the board of directors.
ESMA also intends to feed back its oversight findings directly into the European Commission's review of MiCA, which is expected to be completed by June 2027. Regulators say issues it identifies in its oversight efforts could shape new legislative proposals.
For crypto companies operating within the EU, the message is clear: the era of building compliance procedures around a single rulebook is giving way to an era of active, continuous review. The chairman of the regulator emphasized that ESMA wanted innovation to flourish in an environment that provided clear guidance to regulated entities while protecting investor interests.
