Chainlink News: How CRE helps banks connect to Swift's ledger
Banks don't hand over transaction keys just to be linked. So how does this actually work? This week's Chainlink News provides the answer through two simultaneous measures.
On September 28, CCIP 2.0 was officially launched. On the same day, Chainlink announced that it was connecting financial institutions to Swift's blockchain ledger. Neither of these events is new individually, but this Chainlink news combination shows how LINK is providing banks with the "pipeline" infrastructure they need to transfer tokenized funds across chains.
Banks connect to Swift ledgers via CRE
According to Chainlink's own announcement, the platform is enabling financial institutions to connect their systems to Swift's blockchain ledgers. At its core is a self-signature model built based on the Chainlink runtime environment (CRE).
The following is what it means in practice:
- Institutions retain control of the keys that authorize their own transactions
- CRE orchestrates the workflow that connects banks and Swift ledgers
- Existing security governance and approval processes remain unchanged
- Banks receive 24/7 access Access to the tokenized deposit payment workflow
Swift's ledger coordinates the flow of funds between banks, including overnight and weekend periods, until final settlement is completed. It does not replace Swift's messaging role. Settlement still runs through existing mechanisms such as the real-time full settlement system RTGS.
Swift launched the ledger at the 2025 Sibos conference, when more than 40 institutions participated. It is currently being piloted by 17 pioneer banks connected to a Swift network of more than 11,500 institutions.
What CCIP 2.0 adds to institutions
CCIP 2.0 adds three capabilities to Chainlink's existing cross-chain messaging capabilities, which have processed more than $84 billion in transactions.
Capability cross-chain validators (CCVs) allow institutions or third parties (including AWS and Google Cloud) Add an additional verification layer configurable settlement speeds that allow issuers to choose faster confirmation speeds (through Ethereum's Rapid Confirmation Rules) or wait for the full Final Automated Compliance Engine (ACE) to build whitelists, sanctions screening, and transaction limits in transfers Specific about the Rapid Confirmation Rules: Previously, it took approximately 13 minutes to confirm transfers on Ethereum. They can now be settled in 12 to 24 seconds. This fast path is not backed by pledged ETH. Unless the publisher chooses to enter the fast path, full 13-minute finality remains the default setting.
Chainlink positions the CCIP 2.0 framework as an infrastructure for greater transformation of on-chain finance. This Chainlink news framework is Chainlink's own positioning, not an independent market forecast.
DTCC collateral application chain joining
- Swift
