Bitget resumes coin withdrawal service: Security incidents affected nearly US$388 million in assets, and attackers are still transferring funds through THORChain.
Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget announced the resumption of coin withdrawal service. Previously, a security breach occurred on the platform, causing damage to nearly $388 million in assets. Currently, attackers are still transferring stolen cryptocurrency through the decentralized protocol THORChain.
Bitget said it had resumed its Bitcoin (BTC) withdrawal service on Monday, a move after suspending the service following a security incident last week. In addition, the coin withdrawal function of other assets and networks will be restored one after another in the next few days.
Bitget disclosed that a security breach on September 24 affected the infrastructure of its hot wallet and some warm wallet, while cold wallet remains secure. Later, Bitget revised the stolen amount from the original $351.6 million to $387.5 million after counting additional transfers on the Zcash and Tron networks.
Ethereum (ETH) and USDT withdrawals are about to resume, and security reviews continue to advance
Bitget CEO Gracy Chen said at Monday's "Ask Me Anything"(AMA) event that the first thing to resume is the BTC withdrawal service on the Bitcoin network and the BNB smart chain. "We give priority to resuming BTC withdrawal because the repair work of the withdrawal channel was completed first." Chen added that as the security review work progresses, the withdrawal services of Ethereum (ETH) and TEDA (USDT) will also be restored later.
According to the timetable announced by Bitget, ETH withdrawal services on Ethereum, BNB Intelligent Chain, Arbitrum, Base and Optimism networks will be restored on Tuesday; USDT withdrawal services on Ethereum, BNB Intelligent Chain, Solana and Tron networks will be restored on Wednesday. Cash withdrawal services for other assets and peer-to-peer (P2P) trading services are expected to resume on Friday.
Chen emphasized that the timetable applies to all users, and institutional customers, VIP users or Bitget employees do not enjoy priority access.
THORChain responds: Network suspension cannot selectively freeze funds
In response to this incident, Bitget CEO Gracy Chen called on THORChain-a decentralized protocol used to exchange assets between different blockchains-to refuse to serve addresses associated with the attack address.
Lookonchain reported on Monday that attackers were exchanging Ethereum for Bitcoin through THORChain, and Arkham's data showed that ETH associated with the attacker was flowing into THORChain's vault.
In response, THORChain issued a statement on Monday saying that its network suspension is an emergency security mechanism that will have a broad impact on the entire agreement and "is not a selective freeze on specific funds or personal transactions."
