Ripple hires LME treasurer to advance tokenized asset strategy
Ripple has hired Joseph Thompson, chief treasurer of the London Metal Exchange (LME), to strengthen its institutional trading and tokenized asset strategy. Thompson is currently senior vice president and chief financial officer of the London Metal Exchange and will leave on August 31, 2026.
He will join Ripple's trading and markets team, bringing rich experience accumulated in major global commodity trading markets. The appointment enhances Ripple's ability to connect blockchain products with mature markets for commodities and other traditional financial instruments.
In addition, Thompson has in-depth knowledge of financial operations, liquidity management and market infrastructure. These skills are expected to support Ripple's institutional business development. XRP ledgers continue to play an important role in this strategy, as institutions can issue and transfer tokenized assets through their blockchain infrastructure.
Ripple Prime expands institutional market access
Ripple's institutional expansion also includes providing Delta One services to customers through its Ripple Prime platform. The service provides total return swaps linked to U.S. stocks, stock indices and digital assets for professional investors.
Hedge funds and asset management companies can gain economic risk exposure through such derivatives without directly purchasing underlying securities. As a result, institutions can include total return swaps in portfolio hedging, financing, market risk exposure and investment strategies.
In addition, Ripple Prime also provides clearing, financing and primary brokerage services covering the digital asset, foreign exchange and derivatives markets. Ripple builds the platform around a single counterparty model, allowing customers to access the market through an institutional relationship. This arrangement could simplify execution, financing and collateral management processes for companies operating in traditional and blockchain markets.
Capital supports Ripple's broader financial strategy
Ripple Prime holds more than US$1 billion in regulatory net capital to support its institutional operations. At the same time, Ripple completed a $275 million private placement in senior unsecured notes, adding resources to the expansion of the financial services industry.
Tokenization can represent traditional assets on blockchain networks, while primary brokerage services provide liquidity and financing that supports their use. However, Ripple must integrate these services while meeting strict regulatory, operational and risk management standards for multiple financial markets. Thompson's experience in the commodity market provides Ripple with expertise to build an infrastructure that connects traditional finance and blockchain products.
