Previously, authorities had seized approximately US$201,400 in cryptocurrency and were also recovering US$2 million in funds related to sanctioned Gaza financial services company Buy Cash.

The U.S. Department of Justice seizes more than US$560,000 in cryptocurrencies related to Hamas fundraising

The U.S. Department of Justice seized more than US$560,000 in cryptocurrencies related to fundraising activities of Hamas and its military branches. Authorities also seized websites, domain names and servers supporting the campaign, according to a Sept. 1 bulletin issued by the Justice Department and FBI. Officials believe these digital resources were used to collect and transfer donations for Hamas and the Qassam Brigades. [TAG

Investigators obtained three seizure orders relating to cryptocurrency transactions completed during 2025. In addition, court documents show organizers changed wallet addresses, making it harder for authorities to track donations. The FBI has also identified thousands of people who have contacted Hamas online about cryptocurrency donations. As a result, investigators can use these communication records to locate other transactions suspected of being in the fundraising network.

FBI tracks broader cryptocurrency activity

The operation follows a separate seizure in March 2025 involving approximately $201,400 in cryptocurrency. Court documents show that more than $1.5 million has been transferred since the end of 2024. In addition, the Justice Department also pursued a recovery of $2 million in digital currency related to Gaza financial services company Buy Cash. The U.S. Treasury Department has previously imposed sanctions on the company for its alleged involvement in funding militant groups.

Hamas announced in 2023 that it would stop accepting cryptocurrency donations because blockchain records would expose donor information. However, transactions discovered in the seizure order indicate that fundraising activities related to the group have continued since then.

Authorities crack down on online infrastructure that supports fundraising

In addition to confiscating cryptocurrencies, authorities have also taken action against technological infrastructure allegedly used to support fundraising activities. These websites have published wallet addresses and donation guidelines, while servers support communication between organizers and potential donors. Therefore, controlling these systems may restrict access to payment information while retaining evidence. Investigators can review recovered records to track more transactions and identify other participants in the suspected financing network.

This law enforcement strategy combines cryptocurrency tracking with actions targeting online resources that support suspicious transfers. Notably, authorities are pursuing funds collected, while also cracking down on systems that could facilitate future donations. The Justice Department has not disclosed whether the investigation will lead to criminal charges or further seizures. However, information obtained from wallets, websites and servers may reveal more activity related to the network.
