Cathy Wood's ARK Fund's $21 million block trade: seemingly bullish, but not

Ark Invest co-founder and CEO Cathy Wood spent nearly $21 million on Block shares on Thursday after the company's share price fell more than 6%. At first glance, this seems to be a clear statement of confidence in Jack Dorsey's financial technology company. However, Ark's rules for its portfolio reveal a different picture-according to its rules, this is actually a routine portfolio rebalancing operation.

According to Ark's diversification strategy set out in its disclosure document, the agency limits any single investment to no more than 10% of a single fund. As stock prices fluctuate, so does the weight of a company in the portfolio. When a stock's holdings fall below its target level, Ark usually increases its holdings to restore its weight; conversely, if the increase is too large, it will reduce its holdings.

The same seems to be true for Block. Before Thursday's buying operation, Block was the 10th largest position in Ark's Next Generation Internet ETF (ARKW), with a market value of approximately $60 million, or 3.51% of the fund's total assets.

Ark follows an established strategy

From this perspective, Thursday's acquisition was more based on portfolio management considerations than represented any new investment principles. Ark purchased a total of 267,676 shares of Block stock through its three exchange-traded funds-Ark Innovation ETF (ARKK), ARKW, and Ark Blockchain and FinTech Innovation ETF (ARKF). Block's share price closed at US$79 at the time of purchase, down 6.15% on the day.

Similar operations were staged earlier this week. On August 4, Ark Invest spent approximately US$8 million to buy shares of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, as its share price plunged more than 14% after its earnings report. Coinbase was previously ARKK's sixth-largest position. The next day, Ark invested approximately $17.3 million in Circle, which was ARKK's ninth-largest position at the time, trading at around $63.

Increase holdings in existing heavy positions

Ark is not pursuing new investment targets, but frequently increases holdings of the largest investment targets it already holds, especially after stock prices have fallen. This "buy on dips, rebalance on demand" strategy is one of the key methods Wood uses when managing ETFs. Overall, the goal of each transaction is to maintain the ideal weight in the portfolio rather than reflect any fundamental shift.

This model dates back months. At the end of January this year, after Bitcoin briefly fell below $90,000, Ark spent $21.5 million in one trading day to buy shares in Coinbase, Circle and Bullish. This is the first time the company has purchased shares of the three companies since mid-December last year.

It is estimated that on the day when Bitcoin was trading at approximately US$75,000, Ark invested approximately US$72 million in cryptocurrency stocks, of which approximately US$32.7 million was used to purchase Robinhood shares. Wood still believes that Bitcoin's low correlation with traditional assets is a major advantage in the long run.

Block's performance exceeded expectations, Mizuho issued cost warning

The decline in Block's share price has nothing to do with its fundamentals. The fintech company's second-quarter revenue was US$6.62 billion, a year-on-year increase of 9%, exceeding analyst expectations. Adjusted earnings per share were $1.02, a 65% increase; gross profit soared to $3.17 billion, a 25% increase. However, investors 'concerns have shifted to the cost side.

Mizuho analysts said that even though Block laid off about 40% of its employees in February, its operating costs continued to rise. Based on Block's forecast, Mizuho expects adjusted operating costs to increase from US$4.48 billion in the first half to US$4.56 billion in the second half.

Ark buys and sells on the same day

Ark's selling operations provide strong evidence that these transactions are intended to maintain portfolio structure rather than to maintain general optimism about cryptocurrency stocks. On the same day it bought Block, Ark sold 39,509 shares of Bullish stock through ARKW, reducing its holdings by approximately US$910,000 after the stock closed down 3.36% at US$23.04. Earlier this week, the company also sold 5,700 shares of Solana-focused treasury firm Solmate for a transaction value of nearly $25,000.

Buying one cryptocurrency-related stock and selling another on the same day does not indicate a judgment on the direction of the industry, but rather demonstrates Ark's investment operation: it continues to adjust the weight of the investment portfolio based on market changes.

Is Ark changing his investment philosophy?

Ark Invest has not said it wants to withdraw from the Bitcoin space. However, multiple research institutions have increasingly viewed cryptocurrency-related stocks as a separate investment class linked to broader digital asset adoption. Bitwise believes that cryptocurrency stocks can serve both as a "proxy for crypto-asset exposure" and as a "unique independent investment" and calls it a "shovel selling" strategy in the field. Bernstein has repeatedly pointed out that cryptocurrency exchanges and financial technology services companies such as Coinbase are the main beneficiaries of clearer regulation and expanded institutional adoption in the United States. Galaxy Research analyzed exchanges, tokenization platforms, stablecoins and other cryptocurrency infrastructure businesses as investment themes independent of Bitcoin. JPMorgan analysts also tend to evaluate cryptocurrency-related companies based on business fundamentals, including trading activity, custody, payments and tokenization revenue, rather than just treating them as leveraged bets on the price of Bitcoin.

Ark's own "Big Ideas" report shows that the institution has long invested in disruptive innovation in areas such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, financial technology and digital assets. "Our mission is to achieve long-term capital appreciation by identifying and investing in leaders, promoters and beneficiaries of disruptive innovation."
