Coinbase launches "Pulse Mode": a simplified version of perpetual contract trading interface
Shortly after rebranding its Base App to Coinbase Wallet, Coinbase launched a simplified mobile interface called "Pulse Mode" specifically for perpetual contract trading. This feature provides eligible users with a convenient channel to conduct leveraged transactions directly within a self-managed wallet, without having to leave the application to use a separate exchange or platform. This marks the most direct consumer-facing step the company has taken as it expands into derivatives.
Functional analysis of Pulse Mode
Pulse Mode provides a simplified interface for opening and managing leveraged long and short positions, often referred to as Perps. In perpetual contract trading, traders can make bets on asset price movements without an expiration date and use leverage to amplify two-way gains or risks. Coinbase Wallet maintains its self-custodial nature while supporting spot cryptocurrencies, tokenized assets, forecast markets, commodities and perpetual contract markets. Pulse Mode is positioned as the gateway to the derivatives portion of the ecosystem. Currently, the company has not announced detailed rate schedules, leverage limits or regional eligibility requirements for the new model.
Announcement and promotion rhythm
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong posted a post about the feature on the X platform on September 12, sharing pictures of the new interface and inviting users to download the updated app. However, his post did not provide technical specifications, a complete list of supporting markets, or specific risk control measures that apply to positions opened through Pulse Mode. The promotion seems to adopt a gradual strategy, with usability based on user eligibility status rather than a one-time global simultaneous launch, which is consistent with Coinbase's previous phased introduction of new features.
Broader derivatives strategy
This release follows Coinbase's decision to restore the app name from Base to Coinbase Wallet and is part of its broader involvement in the derivatives space. The move echoes other recently launched Coinbase products, such as Bitcoin Mortgage developed in partnership with Better. In addition, the company has filed a separate application with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to provide perpetual contracts for single-share stocks to U.S. investors, indicating that leveraged products have become a key focus area of its retail roadmap. Pulse Mode is currently the first consumer-facing mobile wallet step in this direction, and its market response will shape how Coinbase more aggressively expands its perpetual contract business to ordinary users in the coming months.
Why is it worth paying attention to
The timing of this launch is quite profound. Demand for leveraged trading in the retail market has grown significantly over the past year, and mobile-first interfaces have become a key battleground for exchanges and wallets competing for traders to manage positions anytime, anywhere. Pulse Mode is Coinbase's response to this need. Its promotion process will test the acceptance of self-managed wallets rather than derivatives on traditional exchanges by ordinary users, revealing the true appetites of the market.
