Tokyo-listed company Metaplanet approved the establishment of a wholly-owned subsidiary in Hong Kong with an initial capital of US$1 million.
Tokyo-based cryptocurrency investment company Metaplanet has approved the establishment of a new wholly-owned subsidiary in Hong Kong and allocated it with an initial capital of US$1 million. The move marks an important step in the company's strategic expansion and aims to strengthen its bitcoin-related financial services in Asia.
Metaplanet Asset Management Asia plans to launch
The planned subsidiary is called "Metaplanet Asset Management Asia Limited" and is expected to be officially incorporated in September 2026. The company plans to use a combination of client funds and own capital to enable the branch to invest in bitcoin, stocks, preferred stock, credit products and other liquid assets.
The first directors of thesubsidiary include Simon Gerovich, Darren Winia and Kelvin Lee. As a company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Metaplanet has recently attracted attention due to its huge Bitcoin holdings and expansion in global markets.
Metaplanet said the new Hong Kong office will provide key trading, asset management and risk monitoring services during Asian trading hours, especially during the U.S. market closures. Miami will continue to serve as the company's central hub for institutional investment, while Hong Kong will become its main base in the Asia Pacific region.
The company noted that the subsidiary will operate in conjunction with its Miami asset management branch, which will be launched in March 2026. While the Miami team is responsible for developing the core strategy, the Hong Kong office will ensure coverage of Asian market trading hours and provide operational support.
"Nova Plan" and Asian Expansion Blueprint
Metaplanet described the Hong Kong business layout as part of the "Nova Plan", which aims to develop a wide range of financial services around its huge Bitcoin reserves. The "Nova Plan" covers the development of credit products and investment vehicles linked to Bitcoin positions.
According to a public statement, the Hong Kong subsidiary will mainly assist in asset procurement, monitor market conditions and manage risk exposure during local trading hours. The latest disclosure did not mention when the new entity would start managing external customer assets, nor did it mention any specific product or regulatory license information.
Metaplanet emphasized that the Hong Kong unit will "support asset trading and risk management during the Asian session" as part of the Nova Plan, demonstrating its commitment to expanding bitcoin-related investment capabilities in the region.
The company confirmed that it will maintain a 100% shareholding in its Hong Kong subsidiary. At the same time, it said that the new office is expected to have little impact on financial results in 2026, and more information will be provided separately if there are changes.
Recent developments and growing Bitcoin assets
In 2026, Metaplanet will make frequent moves in mergers and acquisitions and capital markets. In June this year, the company reached an agreement to acquire Japanese brokerage Siiibo Securities for 2.1 billion yen, and completed the purchase in July, changing the company's name to Metaplanet Securities. The broker retained its licensed trading registration in Japan.
In addition, the company has worked with JPYC and Progmat to study bitcoin-backed credit products, but has not yet launched any products or finalized final terms with partners.
Another partnership announced in August involves NASDAQ listed Super League Enterprise. The latter plans to change its name to Superplanet and use the ticker symbol SUPA. Metaplane plans to inject 2,100 bitcoins and US$2.5 million in cash into Superplanet to acquire a 95.7% stake in it before future warrants are exercised. The agreement also includes a five-year lock-up period.
With the purchase of 2,823 bitcoins in the second quarter, Metaplanet further consolidated its position as a major bitcoin holder, currently having 43,000 bitcoins on its balance sheet. In August, 5,014 bitcoins were transferred internally between Metaplanet's escrow wallets, and company representatives confirmed that none of the 43,000 bitcoins had been sold.
Gerovich pointed out that the investment in Superplanet marks Metaplane's planned entry into U.S. capital markets, adding that the agreement provides a path for future cross-border expansion.
