During the afternoon trading session, the U.S. Treasury Department held an auction of $70 billion in 5-year notes. Auction demand was sluggish, and the final yield was set at 5.033%, the highest since 2006. Investors are demanding additional compensation to absorb debt, signaling a weakening market willingness to hold government securities at current interest rates.

Impact on the cryptocurrency sector

Rising yields have reduced the appeal of non-interest-earning assets, which include Bitcoin and many other digital currencies. ZEC, XRP and HYPE fell 5% to 6%, respectively. Ether, Solana and BNB fell between 2% and 3%.

XRP suffered additional losses in subsequent trading sessions, falling 7.5% to US$1.5052. Cardano retreated 7.1%, while $TRUMP memo plunged 11.4%.

Currently, Bitcoin trading prices are below the US$85,000 mark. Ledn co-founder Mauricio Di Bartolomeo pointed out that there were a large number of call options held at the exercise price before approximately $14 billion in options expired on the Deribit platform on Friday.
