In-depth analysis of coin purchase costs and asset ownership for newbies in Germany
In Germany, first-time users who buy Bitcoin usually download an application and almost inevitably pay a higher fee than expected. On the face of it, transaction fees are often small or completely absent, as many providers promote "zero-fee" transactions. However, the real costs are hidden in the bid-ask spread. Among the five apps compared in this comparison, the spread for each transaction ranges from 0.15% to 2.49%. Taking 100 euros as an example, this means you need to pay an extra 15 cents or 2.49 euros; if you make a fixed investment for a period of one year, the difference will reach tens of euros.
The second question is more important to beginners but less frequently mentioned: Who owns the coins after purchase? Can you actually access them? If an app does not allow assets to be transferred to your own wallet, it is selling only exposure to price, not the cryptocurrency itself. This article will display the two dimensions of cost and asset custody side by side, and analyze the five most commonly used applications for German beginners.
Comparison methods and data sources
This comparison is based on the public fee and price information compiled by cryptoticker.io on October 3, 2026, involving five providers: Bitvavo, Kraken, Bison, Bitpanda and Trade Republic. We examined five applications and focused on four indicators: cost per purchase, custodian, transfer options, and regulatory authorization. The analysis was independently compiled by cryptoticker.io.
Differences between crypto applications and crypto exchanges
Essentially, encryption applications are first and foremost just an interface. The structure behind it determines the price and your rights to the asset. There are three common architectures in the German market, and they look almost identical on the screen.
1. Exchange-based apps
In an exchange app, you place an order into an order book, and other users form the counterparty. You pay a clear transaction fee, which is usually divided into market makers (Maker) and takers (Takers). A market maker means that your order enters the order book first and provides liquidity; a buyer means that your order is immediately executed with existing orders. Bitvavo and Kraken adopt this model.
2. Broker apps
In contrast, in broker apps, you buy directly from the provider and the other party quotes the price. You usually don't see any separate fees, but the bid price is above the market price and the ask price is below the market price. Bison and Bitpanda's main apps follow this pattern.
3. Neobroker
The third form is Neobroker, which places cryptocurrencies in securities accounts alongside stocks and ETFs. Trade Republic falls into this category, but since the launch of its wallet function, it has actually held coins as cryptoassets, not as certificates. This is an important difference from providers that only carry crypto ETPs (exchange-traded products): the latter buy securities that track prices, not the coins themselves.
Price differences rather than fees: The true source of encryption application costs
The "free" of cryptographic applications is often not really free. Bison clearly stated on its fee page that transactions are free of handling fees, but only regular market spreads apply. This price difference is where the cost lies.
What is the price difference?
Spread is the difference between the price you can buy and the price you can sell at the same time. It will not be charged separately, but will be built into the quote. That's why it doesn't show up as a separate item on the bill, and why beginners often underestimate it.
In practice: You pay once when you buy and again when you sell. Professionals call this "round-trip costs." A March 2026 study showed that Bitvavo's total transaction costs were as low as 0.53%, while Coinbase's highest was 6.45%. Between these two values, there is a twelve-fold difference for the same product.
In addition, there are some fees that are not related to the transaction. Bison charges a 2.49% fee for instant deposits made via credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, while ordinary euro transfers are free. At Bitpanda, PayPal deposits are 1.49%, while SEPA transfers are free. As a result, a convenient way to deposit may be more costly on the payment path than the purchase itself.
Cost comparison of five encryption apps: 0.15% to 2.49% for a single purchase
The following summary summarizes the disclosure terms as of October 3, 2026. These values are list prices for retail customers and do not include discounts; at some providers, transaction volume tiers can significantly reduce rates.
This calculation has one limitation that you should be aware of: It treats the average spread as constant. In fact, it fluctuates with market conditions, and for small-cap currencies, the spread performs differently between calm and busy periods. The exact number you purchased is only given on the order screen at the time of execution. See our Bitcoin Price Overview for the relationship between purchase costs and price performance.
Asset custody: Who owns the coins in the app
After purchase, your coins are usually not held by you, but by the provider. This is the norm for all five apps and is not a shortcoming in itself, as hosting licenses exist for that. But it does change the question of who holds the key at critical times.
Custodians and Insurance
Trade Republic points out custodians: Cryptographic assets are stored in BitGo Europe GmbH's cold wallets, i.e. keys without permanent network connections. Bison does not list the custodian on its fee page, but lists it as a free service along with insurance coverage for theft prevention and hacking.
Insurance coverage is not a deposit guarantee plan. For crypto assets, the statutory € 100,000 deposit protection does not apply because it covers bank deposits in euros, not coins. If the provider commits to insurance, it is worth looking at what it covers, whom it works with, and how much it covers. This information is in the terms and not in the advertisement.
The first is regular and fixed investment. It solves the issue of timing of entry and spreads purchases over time. What matters is whether the fee is charged on a percentage or a fixed amount: the fee for a euro order in a 25 euro instalment is 4% and 0.4% in a 250 euro instalment. As a result, small installments are very expensive at providers that charge a flat fee, even if the numbers seem small.
The second point is staking. Trade Republic provides collateral for networks such as Ethereum and Solana, and points out that during the pledge period coins are bound to the network and cannot be sold. This is not an incidental note, but the core issue: pledge means giving up ready availability. How much of the revenue remains in the hands of providers varies widely. In a special article on September 6, 2026, we set Bison's revenue share at 27%, which readers can read in our Bison application analysis.
The third point is rewards linked to payment activities. Trade Republic refunds 2% of card spending as Crypto Saveback, with a cap of € 1,500 per month for card spending. Such models are only cost-effective if you use the card anyway; they are not sufficient as a reason to choose an encryption application.
Holding period and taxation: Application choices affect your tax form
In Germany, proceeds from the sale of cryptocurrencies are tax-free for one year after holding. The key to calculating the holding period is the acquisition date of a single coin, and this is where application becomes a factor: you need a complete purchase record, including the date and quantity, otherwise the holding period cannot be proved later.
The type of records provided by the application is therefore not a convenience feature. While some providers provide ready-made annual reports, others only provide individual transaction exports that require you to organize yourself. Anyone using multiple applications in parallel needs a tool that integrates everything no matter what; some options are provided in our overview of tax tools and portfolio trackers.
Explanation on the status quo: On October 14, 2026, the Federal Cabinet will consider a draft that would impose a 25% withholding tax on crypto assets starting in 2027, which currently only applies to acquisitions after December 31, 2026. This has not yet been decided. The main significance for your choice of applications is that achieving records in the future will be more important than today.
Encryption application advice for beginners: summary of key points
- The differences between the five apps are greater than the interface suggests. The difference between cheap and expensive is tenfold, and custody issues determine whether you own a coin or just participate in its price fluctuations.
- Project the mark-up on your planned regular fixed investment, rather than a single purchase.
- The fixed amount of each order has a heavy impact on small installments, and the percentage spread has a greater impact on large amounts of funds. The current terms of each trading venue can be found in our Crypto Exchange Comparison.
- Check if the app allows you to transfer to your own wallet before making your first purchase.
- Without this feature, your only subsequent exit option is to sell, which is a taxable event in Germany. See hardware wallet comparison for suitable equipment.
- Determine authorizations and records before funds are moved. Starting July 1, 2026, each provider requires a license, and you will need a purchase list with a date. Which institutions have regulators behind them can be found in the list of regulated crypto exchanges.
