The threat of quantum computing is real and may put cryptocurrency users at risk earlier than expected. According to data shared today by Bitcoin's lead developer Christine Kim, quantum computers are advancing rapidly, so they could disable asymmetric cryptography after 2030. This risk is prompting digital networks to adopt rapid and strict security measures to respond to threats.
Currently, quantum computing has become a major risk factor for cryptographic security. Market data shows that by 2030, quantum computers could crack the cryptographic system that protects today's top blockchain networks, such as Bitcoin and many others.
Why Bitcoin launched the anti-quantum program
This explains why Bitcoin developers do not rely on chance or assumption for security. Today, they released a post-Bitcoin quantum security roadmap to make blockchain infrastructure quantum-resistant. The core team led by Christine Kim consolidated years of extensive research into a clearly structured answer to the threat posed by quantum computing.
Today, the team released a post-quantum security roadmap detailing BIP-360, SHRINCS, Lifeboat and Dropkick as key and coordinated interventions to provide comprehensive solutions to long-term risks. This post-quantum security roadmap aims to proactively guard against potential threats that quantum computing may pose to blockchain. The plan focuses on providing end-to-end security for blockchain infrastructure, verifiers, private state and wallets.
Deadline for quantum-resistant migration
Today, Bitcoin developers released their proposed roadmap, highlighting key priorities for the first-layer network to become quantum-resistant at the data layer, consensus and execution levels (through December 2029). This timetable is in line with phased migration plans by organizations such as Microsoft, Cloudflare and Google.
Recently, the above-mentioned organizations set a deadline of December 2029, hoping that digital networks will transition to post-quantum cryptography. The announcement has recently sparked more scrutiny of protocols that still rely on elliptic curve signatures.
As a result, on August 31, XRP launched its four-phase security framework with the goal of completing it by 2028. On September 9 last week, Ethereum released its subsequent quantum security framework, with the goal of achieving quantum resistance by December 2029. Today, Bitcoin followed suit, releasing a coordinated post-quantum cryptographic transition strategy.
