Bitcoin's weekly closing at its 50-week moving average, with significant technical signals

According to CoinGecko data, Bitcoin's closing price was above its 50-week moving average in the week ending September 20, for the first time in 45 weeks. Bitcoin rose nearly 1.5% during the week, with a cumulative increase of 20% in the past 35 days, and trading prices hovering around $81,600.

The current 50-week moving average is around US$78,115, which means that Bitcoin has broken through the long-term trend line that served as resistance during previous declines. After experiencing a 29% price rise in the past 35 days, Bitcoin closed above its 50-week moving average on a weekly basis for the first time in 45 weeks.

Galaxy Research data points out that for the week ending September 20, 2026, Bitcoin closed at $81,159, while the 50-week moving average was approximately $78,115. This distinction is crucial: a week-level close above the moving average, rather than a brief intraday crossing, forms the core basis for technical analysis, and multiple analysts have agreed on this.

Galaxy Research analysis found that of the 13 weekly movements in history that have returned to above the 50-week moving average, 11 did not hit a new low. The core question now is whether Bitcoin can remain above for long enough to turn the previous resistance area into effective support.

Why the 50-week moving average is important to Bitcoin

50周移动平均线计算的是过去一年每周的收盘价平均值,用于指示比特币的长期趋势。在价格上涨阶段,比特币通常在该均线上方交易;而在下跌阶段,反弹尝试往往会在该均线下方失败。

Galaxy Research

Galaxy Research分析了自2011年以来比特币的主要下跌行情,确定了13次比特币周线收盘高于50周移动平均线的案例。在这13次情况中的11次里,市场之后并未创下新低,这表明最糟糕的下跌阶段往往已经过去。

The historical rebound after such crosses is huge: Bitcoin rose from about $2 to nearly $1,200 after the 2011 crash; after the bear market ended in 2014, Bitcoin rebounded from about $200 and rose to nearly $20,000 by the end of 2017. After the 2018 crash, a rebound in May 2019 pushed Bitcoin up from about $3,200 to more than $69,000 by the end of 2021. The most recent time was after breaking the average in March 2023, Bitcoin soared from approximately $15,500 to a high of approximately $126,000 in October 2025.

These examples demonstrate the size of the potential rebound, but do not imply that the moving average signal is causally decisive. It should be regarded as one of multiple indicators rather than the only independent factor explaining market trends.

False signal risk

History does not guarantee results, and past recovery operations have failed. Of the 13 cases identified by Galaxy Research, two failed to hold: at the intersections of December 26, 2021 and March 27, 2022, when Bitcoin briefly exceeded the moving average and then fell to around $16,000.

These examples show that a single weekly close above the moving average does not confirm the end of a bear market, and subsequent price movements are equally important. Currently, the latest signs of recovery suggest that bear market lows could be set at around $60,000. The key test now is whether Bitcoin can stay above its average of about $78,115 in the coming weeks.

According to Bitget data, the weekly closing price was approximately $81,159, while the 50-week moving average was approximately $78,788. Despite differences among different data sources, both showed closing prices above the moving average.
