The real-time throughput of the Internet Computer (ICP) is approaching that of Solana.
According to data from @chainspect_app, over the past week, the @dfinity network processed approximately 1,816 transactions per second. Currently, Solana still leads with a throughput of 1,896 transactions per second. However, during this statistical period, the value of $SOL decreased by nearly 1%, while the throughput of the ICP token increased by 6.33%. Based on these figures, the gap between the two networks has narrowed to around 80 transactions per second.
The reason for this narrowing of the gap is unclear.
The latest figures show significant differences compared to recent snapshot data. According to Hokanews, in mid-September, Solana ranked second with 1,710 transactions per second, while the Internet Computer ranked third with 1,502 transactions per second, a difference of 208 transactions per second. In that ranking, the BNB Chain ranked third with 213.7 transactions per second, far behind both networks.
The rankings between the two chains also vary depending on the measurement window used. According to data from Chainspect, during August, Solana led with 1,635 transactions per second, while the Internet Computer ranked second with 1,309 transactions per second. In contrast, a report from Bankless Times in May showed that the Internet Computer had an average throughput of 2,554 transactions per second, while Solana only had 1,153 transactions per second. Short-term changes in load can have a significant impact on these numbers.
The logic behind the data differences is unclear.
The architectures of these two networks are completely different. According to a report by Chainspect, cited by Bitget News, the Internet Computer distributes its workloads across more than 49 separate subnets, with each subnet running its own consensus mechanism. This allows the network to scale horizontally, rather than through a single execution layer. In contrast, Solana relies on a single, high-speed chain.
Chainspect’s data also shows that the Internet Computer leads in terms of total transaction volume over time. According to The Crypto Times, as of August 11, the total number of transactions on the Internet Computer exceeded 298 billion, while Solana had only 121 billion transactions.
Throughput is just one indicator of a network’s health. Usage and token values do not move in sync: According to Startup Fortune, despite the Internet Computer having surpassed 300 billion transactions, its price remains around $2.11. Whether the Internet Computer can surpass Solana in terms of weekly real-time TPS will depend on whether recent trends continue.
