Emergency upgrade warning: Core Lightning node operators face choice

Core Lightning, one of the main client implementations of the Bitcoin Lightning network, has issued a notice to node operators asking them to prepare for an emergency upgrade or take nodes offline. Previously, the network encountered a wave of security breach reports generated by artificial intelligence. The alert puts operators in an awkward position: the fix has not yet been released and the fix is subject to a two-week disclosure ban.

Operators are required to upgrade or disconnect

Guidance circulated on Core Lightning's Discord channel (confirmed by a maintainer) provides clear options for node operators. The message said: "If you choose not to upgrade, we recommend taking the node offline." He added: "Given the known risks, we will no longer support previous versions, including version 26.04." The team said the details of the version will remain for a two-week ban period, while the binary file will be released with a signature to verify reproducibility; at the same time, the 26.09 version, originally scheduled for release at the end of September, will remain unchanged.

AI-generated reports trigger countermeasures

The team first issued a warning on August 13, writing on the X platform: Core Lightning has "received AI-generated CVE reports submitted by multiple sources" in the past 10 days and is working with external contributors to classify them. This follows a wave of AI-assisted audits in the Bitcoin open source ecosystem, including the Bitcoin Red Team of volunteers, which recently submitted thousands of audit results across hundreds of projects.

Infrastructure alerts have wider reach

According to data cited in the report, the networks covered by the alert carry more than 33,000 channels with a total value of approximately 3,750 BTC. This is the fourth security panic to hit Bitcoin infrastructure in about four weeks, after experiencing a Coldcard firmware loss incident and BTCPay Server update warnings, and echoing an earlier lightning cyber vulnerability that pushed users to upgrade. If the vulnerability is exploited, operators that keep channels open on unpatched nodes will face forced closures or funding risks, while payments routed through affected channels may experience liquidity disruptions. Since the repair plan subject to the ban has not yet been publicly stated, operators cannot currently judge how serious the risk to their funds is.
