Solana launches payment channel to process millions of payments per second

Key facts

Solana launched a payment channel on Thursday. As the first partner, Alibaba Cloud can make payments through this channel when its API endpoints are online.

The Solana Foundation stated that testing 100,000 wallets through payment channel agents processed more than 1 million payments per second.

The payment channel is built based on x402 and MPP payment protocols, and relevant programs, SDKs and documents have been publicly released.

Solana (SOL) launched the payment channel on Thursday, a new primitive the Solana Foundation said processed more than 1 million payments per second in tests.

This release directly hits a bottleneck in proxy payments: the AI agent requires signature and settlement for every call and cannot run at machine speed. The payment channel allows users to set a consumption limit, within which agents can withdraw funds, and settlement is processed in batches rather than executed on a transaction basis.

Solana benchmark of 1 million payments per second

According to the Solana Foundation, the test ran 100,000 individual wallets through payment channel proxies, with enough throughput to process more than 80 billion payments in 24 hours. The document shows that on 100,000 channels, the settlement cycle is approximately 203 seconds, and the cost per 1 million payments is $0.0078. The foundation did not disclose details of the hardware used in the test.

"AI will not wait on the checkout page," wrote Rishin Sharma, head of AI growth at the Solana Foundation."The future of Internet payments needs to be built for unprecedented scale."

The design is based on the HTTP payment standard x402 established last year by Cloudflare and Coinbase, which allows machines to pay each other without API keys, and the MPP session protocol. Smart contracts, tool chains, SDKs and benchmark templates have been released on GitHub.

Alibaba Cloud is the initial partner, and its inference API endpoints can make payments through this channel from the first day of launch. The move follows a similar move by AWS in May to integrate stablecoin payments for AI agents through Coinbase and Stripe.

According to CoinMarketCap data, as of press time, Solana's native token SOL trading price was US$105.10, up 5.8% in 24 hours and 41.8% in 30 days.
