First foreign bank to introduce tokenized deposits to Japan
Citigroup is planning to deploy blockchain-based cross-border payment services for Japanese corporate customers by the end of 2026. The move will make Citi the first foreign bank to provide token-based deposit remittance services in Japan.
Shamil Karik, head of global services at Citi, confirmed the plan in an interview with Japan's Nikkei Shimbun. Tokenized deposits are the digital representation of traditional bank deposits on the blockchain, allowing instant and verifiable transfers, bypassing the slow traditional settlement cycle.
For Japanese companies, this practical shift is significant: foreign currency transfers can be processed in real-time 24 hours a day, 24 hours a day, eliminating business day and holiday windows that restrict traditional wire transfers. The service is mainly aimed at Japanese companies with international operations and will initially support cross-border payments between five countries.
By leveraging a privately permissioned blockchain, the solution aims to eliminate traditional deadlines and geographical limitations.
Replace traditional delays with real-time settlement
Traditional cross-border payments involve multiple financial institutions, settlement processes and messaging systems, and funds need to go through multiple stages before reaching the payee. Depending on the country and currency involved, these transactions can take longer and companies need to manage multiple processing stages.
Citi's tokenized infrastructure is designed to directly eliminate this friction. Citigroup flows approximately US$6 trillion in funds through its network every day, and the average daily amount of transfers made through tokenized deposits has reached US$1 billion, proving that the technology has transitioned from the pilot phase to the world's largest custodian bank. By providing a regulated alternative to institutional stablecoins, Citi positions tokenized deposits as a viable infrastructure upgrade suitable for corporate treasury operations.
The launch of the Japanese market is also in line with its broader expansion strategy: the service is already launched in major financial centers such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Hong Kong, and plans to further expand the market.
As banks and financial institutions around the world explore practical applications of blockchain beyond the cryptocurrency market, real-time settlement, tokenized assets, and cross-border payments are becoming distributed ledger technology to reduce friction and improve transaction efficiency.
