BUZZ HPC signed the Canadian Principles for Responsible Data Center Development and became the only signatory with a cryptocurrency background.

BUZZ HPC, a sovereign artificial intelligence cloud and high-performance computing (HPC) service provider, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of HIVE Digital Technologies (NASDAQ: HIVE), signed the "Canadian Principles for Responsible Data Center Development" on September 8. The move adds it to a high-profile list of signatories, including technology giants such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Meta, Anthropic and OpenAI.

The principles were released by the Canadian federal government on September 3 and aim to establish a national framework for the construction and operation of data centers nationwide. A data center is a huge facility that houses a large number of servers, responsible for storing, processing and transmitting digital information, supporting applications in various fields from banking, finance, health care to artificial intelligence. As the demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure continues to grow, the pressure these facilities place on local power grids, water supplies, and communities also increases.

Five major commitments, one standard

The framework establishes five core principles: first, data centers must bring lasting benefits to the local area, including creating jobs, providing training and contributing tax revenue; second, electricity costs must not be passed on to Canadian households or existing businesses; third, freshwater use and environmental impacts must be minimized; and fourth, transparency must be maintained about their local impacts on electricity, water resources, noise and emissions; Finally, we must provide strategic value to Canada through investment, participation in supply chain construction, and improving digital resilience.

Craig Tavares, President and Chief Operating Officer of BUZZ HPC, said the company views these principles as the foundation for building key industries for Canada's competitiveness. "Canada does not have to choose between 'building the digital infrastructure the economy needs' and 'building responsibly.'" Tavares said in a list of signatories released by the government.

The only cryptocurrency-related entity on the list

It is worth noting that BUZZ HPC is the only signatory on the list with roots in the cryptocurrency mining industry. Its parent company, HIVE Digital Technologies, operates Bitcoin mining and data center facilities in Canada, Sweden and Paraguay.

The signing of the agreement comes at a significant timing, just weeks after BUZZ HPC announced a five-year, US$350 million deal for artificial intelligence cloud services at its facility in Merritt, British Colombia. The transaction is supported by NVIDIA GPUs, further demonstrating its determination in the field of AI infrastructure.
