MARA Holdings purchased 1,292 bitcoins worth nearly US$98.64 million

On Wednesday, MARA Holdings executed a transaction through FalconX to purchase 1,292 bitcoins worth approximately US$98.64 million. On-chain data analysis platform Lookonchain reported the trend on September 16. The acquisition comes at a time when artificial intelligence industry leaders are calling for a slower, more regulated pace to advance technology development.

MARA Holdings returns to Bitcoin accumulation

For most of the year, MARA Holdings has been selling Bitcoin rather than buying it. The company turned its focus to artificial intelligence Infrastructure services and sold 23,093 BTC units worth approximately US$1.63 billion. Wednesday's purchase marked one of the company's largest on-chain accumulations in nearly a year.

Currently, the company holds a total of 35,577 BTC, including 9,270 BTC managed by its independent digital asset strategy. At current prices, MARA Holdings 'entire Bitcoin position is worth close to $2.7 billion.

Crypto Legislation Turbulent Day

This purchase coincides with a day of turmoil in cryptocurrency legislation. On the same day, the CLARITY Bill failed to pass a final debate vote in the Senate. The Senate vetoed the cryptocurrency bill in a narrow procedural vote of 50 - 49, and four Republicans deviated from party positions and voted against it.

AI security warnings impact broader market

This week, several prominent artificial intelligence executives warned about the speed of cutting-edge model development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an article titled "We must control the pace of cutting-edge development," warning that advanced artificial intelligence models may soon help build more powerful successor models.

OpenAI's Sam Altman and xAI's Elon Musk expressed similar concerns, pointing to the growing risks to artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Bilal Chughtai, AGI security researcher at Google DeepMind, resigned this week. He warned that unrestricted development of artificial intelligence poses a threat to human survival.

The market interprets these warnings as a threat to continued investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. As these comments emerged, stocks related to artificial intelligence fell sharply, and the sell-off spread to the entire sector. In contrast, bitcoin prices have risen, and some traders see it as a hedge against the risk of a slowdown in artificial intelligence.

Stock prices face independent pressure

However, MARA Holdings 'own stock movements show a different story. On Tuesday, its shares fell 2.7% to close at $11.24 due to a downgrade. JPMorgan downgraded the stock to "underweight" and noted risks associated with the MARA Holdings Starwood joint venture.
