Fetch.ai and NuNet hit a $2 million hack: FET drained, NTX crashed
An attacker stole approximately $2 million from infrastructure related to Fetch.ai and NuNet. The security company pointed out that both attacks targeted the same attacker's wallet address. Preliminary analysis of Fetch.ai revealed that the attacker used stolen signing credentials to gain access to the infrastructure.
While the $2 million loss may be considered insignificant in the estimated $2.85 trillion cryptocurrency market, what makes this incident special is that the leak of privileged credentials gave hackers access to critical infrastructure, highlighting how weaknesses in key management can spread to connected systems, even if the underlying token contract itself is not directly compromised.
The same wallet address not only drained the FET, but also received NTX airdrop tokens. According to PeckShield, hackers removed a total of 8.7 million FETs (worth approximately US$1.53 million) and forged 408.5 million NTXs worth approximately US$462,730 without authorization. Blockaid also observed that approximately $1.56 million in FETs were removed from a converter, while approximately $452,000 in NTX tokens were added. This brought the total value of the wallet cluster to approximately $2.01 million during the attack. Subsequent postings linked NTX's airdrop to the same receiving wallet.
