Canada's six largest banks jointly explore a tokenized deposit system to accelerate the digitalization of payment infrastructure

Canada's six largest banks recently announced a joint initiative to explore the establishment of a shared Canadian dollar tokenized deposit system. The move marks the country's most significant step to date in the digitization of payment infrastructure.

Overview of participating institutions and projects

According to a joint announcement released on Tuesday, six banks jointly exploring the system include Bank of Montreal (BMO), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Scotiabank and TD Bank Group of Toronto.

The so-called tokenized deposits refer to the digital expression of traditional bank deposits, which can be recorded and transferred through blockchain or similar technology. This technology is expected to enable near-real-time, round-the-clock movement and settlement of funds.

Project Objectives and Regulatory Position

The first phase of the initiative aims to enable the flow of tokenized deposits among Canadian financial institutions, and its long-term goal is to connect it with other digital asset initiatives.

Banks said the system can support faster, programmable and 24/7 payment services while ensuring customer funds remain within the regulated banking system. These tokens are issued by commercial banks and, from a legal perspective, depositors can regard them as the same assets as traditional bank deposits.
