Greece officially joined the EU's crypto asset regulatory framework, and four local institutions have entered the MiCA registration list.
Greece has officially integrated into the EU's crypto asset regulatory system for the first time. A total of four local service providers were included in the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) Cryptographic Asset Markets Regulation (MiCA) registry updated on Thursday.
Greek entities enter the MiCA framework
BCash, Xenios Blockchain Group, Capital Wallet Greece and Piraeus Bank became the first Greek entities to be recognized on the EU MiCA registry. The registry is maintained by ESMA and oversees crypto asset service providers approved in compliance with EU harmonized regulations.
With the addition of these new institutions, MiCA's registration performance covers 359 unique crypto asset service providers, including six new members from Germany, France and Slovenia. This growth trend demonstrates the growing influence of EU crypto regulation.
As one of the largest commercial banks in Greece, Bank of Piraeus successfully entered the list. The remaining three providers-BCash, Xenios Blockchain Group and Capital Wallet Greece-are known for providing digital asset services and blockchain solutions in the country.
The Role of Greek Financial Regulators
In Greece, regulatory responsibilities are shared between the Greek Capital Markets Commission (HCMC) and the country's central bank. HCMC has been identified as the regulatory authority responsible for registering BCash, Xenios Blockchain Group and Capital Wallet Greece. For Bank of Piraeus, the Bank of Greece serves as the competent authority, embodying its functions in banking supervision.
This dual regulatory structure stems from MiCA's rules that allow EU member states to assign regulatory responsibilities to multiple national authorities based on the type of crypto asset services provided. Greece's structure is a model of flexibility within this framework.
Binance application blocked and allegations of political interference
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, had previously sought authorization in Greece. If approved, Binance can use MiCA's "passport mechanism" to provide services to customers across the EU. However, Binyan withdrew his application on June 24, before HCMC made a formal decision.
