Hardware wallet manufacturer confirms discovery of illegal implants, suspected theft may expand
After reports emerged that more than $80 million in cryptocurrency may have been stolen from its devices, Ledger confirmed over the weekend that at least one wallet related to the ongoing "CryptoBilis" investigation contained unauthorized hardware implants. At the same time, a new community on Platform X reported that a suspicious Ledger device purchased by MediaMarkt in Europe may have also been tampered with, which would spread the impact well beyond Southeast Asia.
Ledger official confirmation
In its latest statement released late Saturday, the hardware wallet maker said it inspected an affected user's device and found "unauthorized hardware implants" inside. The team said it had contacted affected users and began working with authorities to investigate.
CryptoBilis also responded to Ledger's call to stop selling all hardware wallet inventory, not just Ledger's products, until all investigations are completed. The brand, which owns devices such as the Nano X, said there was no indication that its own security infrastructure, systems or services had been compromised. In addition, the company has not determined how many affected devices contain implants, nor has it confirmed whether the implants found are responsible for all wallet funds stolen.
Our previously released preliminary report shows that customers purchasing through CryptoBilis in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines have been affected. Initial investigations showed suspected losses of more than $86 million, but Bitquery's latest report adjusted that estimate to approximately $93 million, involving 311 wallets across five chains.
Is Europe also affected?
A user posted onX claiming that Ledger equipment purchased through MediaMarkt Europe also showed signs of possible hardware tampering. The report quickly spread among the vast crypto community, triggering warnings that the incident may no longer be limited to Southeast Asia.
However, the wallet manufacturer has not confirmed that there is a security breach in Europe, and users viewing public images are divided about what the images actually display. Some believe the hardware does not look consistent with a real Ledger motherboard, while others say they do not see the same type of additional implant found in Southeast Asian cases.
Despite this, MediaMarkt is the official ledger distributor in several European markets, including Germany and Austria. Currently, this unidentified part of the story is still full of uncertainty, and the original case in Asia is still producing new victims according to reports on X.
