Bitcoin's long-term resilience is under review again: Quantum computing and miners 'incentives are two major structural risks
Former Meta software engineer and content creator TechLeadHD recently pointed out that Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, faces two unresolved structural risks: the potential impact of quantum computing on wallet security, and the continued halving of block rewards, which leads to a gradual weakening of miners' incentives. This view triggered the industry to re-examine Bitcoin's long-term resilience.
These comments are particularly timely at a time when the cryptocurrency industry is already discussing future cryptographic threat responses and the economic sustainability of Bitcoin's security model. Although neither currently poses a direct threat, developers, researchers and institutional investors have begun to include it as a core issue in long-term planning.
Quantum computing: Long-term risks rather than imminent crises
TechLeadHD views quantum computing as Bitcoin's "number one ticking time bomb." Bitcoin uses Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECDSA) to ensure ownership, a technology that is sufficiently secure in today's classic computer environment. However, theoretically advanced quantum computers could derive private keys from public public keys, giving attackers access to vulnerable wallets.
Although no quantum computer currently has this capability, recent research shows that the technology gap may be narrowing faster than expected. Researchers warn that the migration of large blockchain networks to quantum-resistant cryptosystems may take years because protocol upgrades require broad community consensus and rigorous testing.
This discussion does not imply that Bitcoin is facing imminent danger, but highlights the urgency of developers planning migration strategies in advance before quantum hardware becomes practical.
Why quantum computing matters

Declining block rewards raises long-term security concerns
The second question raised by TechLeadHD focuses on the mining economics of Bitcoin. Bitcoin experiences a halving event every four years, cutting new coin issuance by 50%. As miners maintain network security by verifying transactions and generating new blocks, their sources of income increasingly rely on transaction fees as block subsidies decline.
Halving in April 2024 will reduce the block reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC, increasing the pressure on mining profits. If transaction fee income cannot be sufficiently increased to offset the impact of future halving, small miners may withdraw from the market, resulting in a decrease in computing power across the network or an increase in mining concentration.
This controversy has existed since the birth of Bitcoin, but as the Internet gradually relies on transaction fees rather than new coins, the issue has regained attention.

In addition to technical concerns, TechLeadHD also questioned whether Bitcoin could evolve into a sovereign global currency independent of the government. He believes that the government is unlikely to fully accept a monetary system that is outside its control because it involves core areas such as taxation, monetary policy, financial supervision and anti-money laundering enforcement.
This view contrasts with the position of Bitcoin supporters, who believe that the decentralized design of cryptocurrencies makes them a viable alternative currency network without relying on government adoption. The debate is becoming increasingly fierce as global regulators turn to developing a digital asset framework rather than a total ban on cryptocurrencies.
Industry continues to explore long-term solutions
The concerns raised by TechLeadHD are not new issues, but reflect extensive discussions within the Bitcoin ecosystem. Developers have begun to explore solutions to resist quantum cryptography, and researchers continue to analyze the evolution of the Bitcoin fee market in the coming decades. At the same time, many Bitcoin advocates point out that the network has successfully responded to technical and economic challenges many times in history.
For now, neither quantum computing nor miner incentives pose an immediate threat. However, as the network matures, these two long-term issues will become core challenges that the Bitcoin developer community must address.
