SpaceX spent US$1 billion to acquire APR Energy. Musk directly controls mobile gas turbines to help build high-power AI infrastructure.

SpaceX's natural gas strategy
SpaceX disclosed in its S-1 prospectus that its data center operations rely heavily on natural gas, gas turbines and continued access to fuel at economically feasible prices. The document also states that business expansion requires available turbines and related equipment.
Tesla established Musk's public image with electric cars, and subsequently acquired SolarCity in 2016 and launched solar roof tiles. SpaceX's prospectus has repeatedly emphasized that in the era of artificial intelligence, solar energy is the only truly scalable solution to deal with the energy constraints on earth.
However, the Colossus II data center, located near the Tennesse-Mississippi border, is expected to operate on natural gas for the foreseeable future. APR Energy operates trailer mountable gas turbines and diesel generators that can be deployed in days, avoiding the site selection and licensing process required for permanent power plants. SpaceX currently has 59 such units installed.
Risks for SpaceX investors
The Southern Environmental Law Center and Earthjustice filed a lawsuit in June, arguing that equipment being parked in the same location indefinitely should not be considered temporary use. The 59 units may emit a total of 2500 tons of nitrogen oxides per year, although emissions per unit may fall below the federal 100-ton threshold for unlicensed turbines.
The U.S. Departments of Justice and Defense oppose shutting down similar power generating units in Tennessee, citing national security concerns-the equipment is related to the military's use of Grok. That stance may protect these devices in the short term, but SpaceX's prospectus notes that the legal outcome remains uncertain.
For investors, the acquisition reduces exposure to turbine shortages, external suppliers and sudden increases in electricity prices. SpaceX also expects local utility partners to increase grid capacity through their direct funding. As a result, the APR Energy deal is a supplement to the existing power grid, not a replacement.
The broader concern is valuation: SpaceX has recently been valued at nearly $1.8 trillion, and its prospectus links future growth to a $26.5 trillion artificial intelligence market and repeatedly views solar energy as a long-term solution. However, its current spending remains focused on natural gas infrastructure, leaving investors with the question of how long the gap between its solar vision and operational reality can last.
