Robinhood CEO's X platform account was hacked, and fake VLAD token promotion attracted attention
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev's X platform account appeared in an unauthorized post promoting a fake memin called VLAD and sharing a token contract address that was later confirmed to be fraudulent. The incident quickly became the focus.
This post lasted less than 20 minutes, attracted more than 175,000 views, and was later marked as suspicious by users. Robinhood later confirmed that the account had been compromised and said it was working with the X Platform to restore access while deleting unauthorized content.
On-chain monitoring showed that about 650 Ethereum (ETH) pieces were withdrawn from wallets related to the incident, with a value between US$1.2 million and US$1.3 million.
Robinhood CEO X account intrusion leads to fake VLAD token promotion
This unauthorized post claims that VLAD is the official mascot token of Robinhood Chain and attaches a contract address for users to purchase. The post also stated that the token would be available on Robinhood's trading platform, but Robinhood did not make any relevant announcement.
The monitoring platform first reported that the account was hacked. Robinhood Chain's blockchain browser then marked the contract as fraud. Robinhood confirmed the matter through his official communication account, saying that it was coordinating with Platform X to restore access and that the post had been deleted.
According to on-chain monitoring agency MLM, about 650 ETH pieces worth approximately US$1.2 million to US$1.3 million were withdrawn from wallets related to the incident. Another analytical agency forwarded the results of relevant reports.
An online investigator using the pseudonym Jeff said a wallet suspected to be linked to the attacker spent approximately $126.81 to purchase 47.2 million VLAD tokens. Based on market prices at the time, the unrealized value of the position was approximately $159,000. However, this estimate does not indicate that all tokens can be sold because fraudulent tokens are usually limited in liquidity.
Robinhood CEO X account breach highlights Robinhood Chain activity
This false promotion occurred shortly after Robinhood Chain was released on July 1. The blockchain is an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) network built on the Arbitrum Orbit stack that processes approximately 6 million transactions per day, while supporting tokenized real-world assets and active memin transactions.
Blockchain data shows that after the fraudulent token was deployed by a contract called PonsLaunchFactory, approximately 1868 transactions were quickly generated. The contract was subsequently marked as fraud by the blockchain browser.
This incident also coincided with Robinhood Chain's announcement that it would launch a V2 token launch platform. The platform roadmap includes an ETH-based binding curve, integration with Uniswap V4, payments to creators with ETH or selected assets, support for custom transaction pairs corresponding to USDG, AAPL, NVDA, HOOD and other assets, and optional reverse token features. The website claims that the new contract is still under audit and has not yet been implemented.
Attack shows social media account intrusion continues to attract attention
Although the illegal post only existed for a short time, the transaction data showed that there was continuous interaction before it was deleted. The message is based on Robinhood Chain meme activity and uses false official token launch announcements to attract buyers.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks that use stolen social media accounts to promote fraudulent tokens or post malicious contract addresses. Security researchers say that while some types of phishing attacks have caused less damage, others have escalated into cryptocurrency fraud.
