The explosive growth of perpetual contracts is quietly reshaping Ethereum's role in the market structure.
Traders pursuing low latency and deep liquidity are accelerating their migration to second-layer networks, and more and more developers believe that Ethereum should no longer try to compete at the transaction execution level. According to relevant reports, Ethereum should further strengthen its core advantage: providing secure anchoring and final settlement for the second-layer network that carries actual transaction activities. This stance reflects a pragmatic shift.
For years, Ethereum's roadmap has been criticized for speed and cost. High-frequency perpetual contract transactions have never been naturally adapted to a blockchain that prioritizes decentralization rather than throughput. Rollup and Validium technologies have completely changed the situation. Today, protocols such as Arbitrum, Optimism, and zkSync are responsible for order matching and execution, while Ethereum ensures final state security. This architecture solves user experience challenges without requiring Ethereum to compete with Solana or Sui for performance. For traders, the benefits are more immediate: on some second-layer networks, fees can be as low as cents and confirmation times can be shortened to milliseconds, while still benefiting from Ethereum's deep liquidity pool and time-tested security.
This shift has tangible economic components. Perpetual contracts are the single category with the largest transaction volume among cryptocurrencies. When these transaction volumes move away from the main network, Ethereum directly loses fee revenue. The second-layer network settles in batches, compressing thousands of transactions into a single data block and submitting them to the main network. Intuitively, Ethereum makes less per transaction, but its long-term moat is enhanced by cultivating an application-specific chain ecosystem that relies on its security. This is a bet on size rather than unit economy-a business model similar to cloud infrastructure, with low underlying profits but staggering scale when aggregated. However, analysts have not fully incorporated this logic into pricing when evaluating Ethereum's fee generation capabilities. Whether block fees can develop into a stable and reliable source of revenue remains the focus of ongoing debate among institutional trading departments.
Developer Activity: A Window to Insight into the Future
Developer activities provide an effective perspective on future trends. Ethereum still attracts more developers than any other blockchain, and recent data shows that its second-tier network ecosystem is equally active. The lobbying battle highlights the fact that the traditional financial industry still views on-chain settlement models as a competitive threat-and the trajectory on which the Ethereum Layer 2 network is quietly building may one day bypass them completely.
Therefore, the boom in perpetual contracts is more than just a volume story. It is a stress test of Ethereum's most significant strategic bet since the merger. If the second-layer network can maintain these transaction volumes without weakening settlement guarantees, Ethereum can remain the most important without becoming the fastest blockchain. The market is not yet fully convinced, but the developers closest to the infrastructure clearly agree.
