Standard Chartered Bank becomes a key player in BRICS payment infrastructure
According to the latest analysis by cryptocurrency researcher SMQKE and independent journalist Maximus, Standard Chartered Bank has emerged as a key player in the BRICS countries 'growing payment infrastructure. The British multinational banking group calls itself a "Super Connector" and provides institutional-grade, network-agnostic digital solutions to global financial market customers.
XRP's role in Standard Chartered Bank's payment network
Standard Chartered Bank's digital ecosystem covers public blockchains such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, as well as the central bank's digital currency network connected to the mBridge project and its latest form of BRICS Bridge. BRICS Bridge serves as a settlement channel that connects the banking systems of various countries to achieve more efficient cross-border international transactions.
A leaked document from theHyperledger Foundation shows that the architecture interfaces with the global real-time full settlement system infrastructure and integrates local payment networks in the UK, China , the United States, Europe, Japan and other regions, such as SEPA, ACH and FPS. Standard Chartered Bank is directly connected to the payment structure, providing extensive institutional access.
In a document recently circulated by SMQKE and reviewed by Maximus, Ripple and its native asset XRP appear on Standard Chartered Bank's network architecture along with the stablecoin issuer. This position highlights XRP's presence in institutional payments architecture.
Michael Spiegel, global head of transaction banking at Standard Chartered Bank, said of the integration of XRP: "We see a large number of payment service providers that natively support ISO 20022, as well as many token providers and Ripple's XRP." He added that the ISO 20022 standard can connect traditional finance with decentralized finance.
ISO 20022 is an international standard for electronic financial messages, which is currently adopted by major payment systems around the world. Ripple has aligned its products with the standard, which allows XRP to be embedded as a native asset in this institutional financial infrastructure.
Small Dictionary: Project mBridge-A multilateral platform developed by the Bank for International Settlements Innovation Center in cooperation with multiple central banks to participate in cross-border payments and settlements between central banks, supporting the use of central bank digital currency for fast, interoperable payments.
BRICS Pay access extends beyond member states
Another noteworthy element of Standard Chartered Bank's strategy is the integration of BRICS Pay. BRICS Pay is a payment layer built on the BRICS Bridge infrastructure, and its use is not limited to BRICS members. Standard Chartered Bank has embedded BRICS Pay into its digital payment platform, allowing customers to transact directly with BRICS partners.
This functional expansion transforms BRICS Bridge from a closed payment loop used only by BRICS countries to a broader cross-border payment channel. Institutions in the UK and other countries can now interact with the BRICS financial framework through Standard Chartered Bank's infrastructure.
The expansion of BRICS Bridge connectivity suggests that the system could become a global payments network, connecting emerging markets directly to traditional financial centers outside BRICS countries.
Feature comparison:
Closed BRICS system: Only for BRICS users; supports BRICS currencies and central bank digital currencies; scope is limited to regions.
Standard Chartered Bank Integration: Users include global institutions such as BRICS countries and the United Kingdom; support BRICS currencies, central bank digital currencies, XRP, and stablecoins; the scope covers cross-border international.
XRP is recognized by institutions
XRP's presence in this infrastructure has been explicitly recognized by Standard Chartered Bank. As the world's major financial institution, Standard Chartered Bank is closely associated with the BRICS payment network and has adopted message protocols such as ISO 20022 to support the direct use of XRP and other assets in cross-institutional transactions.
This development is noteworthy because few digital assets can gain such a clear position at the institutional financial level. Documents shared by Standard Chartered showed that the integration of XRP was not planned but was completed.
This shows that XRP has gained new recognition at the institutional level as an operating asset in large-scale cross-border payments rather than a speculative tool on the edge of the financial system.
