Jackson McGonagall: A crosshader from traditional finance to the crypto world
Jackson McGonagall's career has been shuttled between traditional finance and crypto. Today, he is back on Nasdaq, the core of Wall Street's market infrastructure, helping the U.S. stock exchange advance its digital asset and tokenization strategy.
McGonagall officially joined Nasdaq as vice president of digital asset strategy in capital markets, focusing on digital assets and tokenization in exchange operators 'capital markets businesses.
His professional experience gave him a unique perspective on this transformation. He initially worked at NYSE Euronext, where he was involved in stocks, options and futures, and then entered Binance as a digital asset trader in 2018. He then worked at Fidelity Digital Assets for nearly three years, and then held capital formation and strategy positions at Numeus Group and Re7 Capital, responsible for institutional digital assets and DeFi-related businesses.
Today, the journey has taken him to Nasdaq, an exchange that is integrating blockchain technology more closely into its core market infrastructure.
Who is Jackson McGonagall, head of tokenization at Nasdaq?
"Tokenization is at the heart of this evolution," McGonagall wrote on LinkedIn when announcing his joining. He described the opportunities that blockchain technology brings to modernize and upgrade global capital market infrastructure.
For Nasdaq, this strategy has moved from concept to implementation. In July this year, Nasdaq participated in a real-time production environment test with the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC), using DTC tokenized assets for Nasdaq's production transactions. This exercise proved that tokenized securities can operate within existing market infrastructure rather than requiring the establishment of a separate blockchain market.
Nasdaq is also embedding its infrastructure deeper into emerging digital markets. Just this week, forecasting market platform Kalshi announced that it would adopt the Nasdaq Market Monitoring System in phases. As a result, the platform has gained cross-market and cross-asset monitoring capabilities, covering forecast markets and sustainable derivatives. The significance of this move is not limited to monitoring itself. It shows that infrastructure developed for traditional financial markets is increasingly being adopted by crypto-related and digital asset businesses as they scale up. As digital markets mature, it becomes increasingly important for Nasdaq to expand cross-market surveillance capabilities.
Next step in Nasdaq's digital asset strategy
Nasdaq is also integrating its broader digital market capabilities into the newly formed Digital Liquidity Networks division, which brings together liquidity platforms, tokenization capabilities and fintech solutions. This reorganization has been accompanied by an expansion of its digital asset strategy, demonstrating that Nasdaq increasingly views blockchain and digital market infrastructure as part of its overall capital markets business.
For McGonagall, the role was almost the intersection of all stages of his career. He has experienced the traditional exchanges of the New York Stock Exchange, Binance's crypto markets, Fidelity's institutional digital assets, and exposure to DeFi and capital formation in investment institutions. Today, at Nasdaq, these experiences converge at the level of market infrastructure-the question is no longer whether institutions will use cryptoassets, but whether blockchain will become part of the traditional financial system. This may turn tokens into the next landmark chapter of his career and is Nasdaq's most important bet on the future of capital markets.
