XLM OFAC continues to strengthen enforcement of digital asset networks suspected of assisting Iran in circumventing sanctions
The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is continuing to expand enforcement actions against digital asset networks related to suspected Iranian sanctions circumvention. Ethereum, Jupiter, Ethena, BNB and Stellar represent different areas such as decentralized finance (DeFi), payments, infrastructure and blockchain markets, respectively. As compliance requirements and transaction monitoring become increasingly important considerations for crypto market participants, the regulatory environment is undergoing profound changes.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reiterated Washington's position that cryptocurrencies do not remove sanctioned financial activities from the scope of U.S. enforcement. The warning came as the Treasury Department stepped up pressure on Iranian financial networks and digital asset platforms accused of assisting in the transfer of funds linked to the Iranian regime.
On September 17, OFAC imposed sanctions on BitBank. According to the Ministry of Finance, the Iranian digital asset exchange was used to transfer hundreds of millions of dollars in bitcoin to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Ethereum faces a changing compliance environment
