Polygon Foundation CEO announces permanent destruction of 100 million $POL tokens

Polygon Foundation CEO Sandeep Nailwal announced plans to permanently remove 100 million $POL tokens from circulation. The move marks one of the most significant supply-reduction actions in the network's history.

How the destruction mechanism works

Polygon is preparing to deploy a permission-free destruction contract that will allow anyone to permanently destroy 100 million POL tokens. This amount represents approximately 83% of the 121 million tokens held by Polygon's basic fee collector.

Currently, smart contracts are online on Testnet and will be deployed to Mainnet after final approval from the Security Council. The destruction mechanism allows communities to trigger the first destruction, followed by a quarterly base fee destruction.

Based on the above data, after the first destruction, approximately 21 million $POL tokens will remain in the basic fee collector, and the balance will gradually increase as additional fees accumulate.

The 100 million tokens destroyed this time are equivalent to 1% of the initial total supply of 10 billion $POL. According to Blockscout data, the total supply of $POL is approximately 10.716 billion units, so the planned destruction amount accounts for approximately 0.93% of the total.

Deflation drivers and macro background

This announcement is the result of months of discussions in the Polygon community to explore how to make $POL more deflationary while online activity continues to grow.
