XRPL overtook Ethereum in the tokenized commodities market, attracting US$2.2 billion in capital inflows
XRP Ledger (XRPL), previously known for its role in cross-border financial settlements, has now surpassed Ethereum in the tokenized commodities market, establishing its position as the leading network for tokenization of real-world assets (RWA) in this field.
XRPL leads the way in tokenized commodities
According to data compiled by Token Terminal and the RWA Foundation Data Analysis Platform in October 2026, since the beginning of the year, XRPL's net capital inflow in tokenized commodities reached US$2.2 billion. During the same period, Ethereum attracted US$1.6 billion, ranking second. Other significant tier 1 blockchain networks lag far behind these two leaders: Avalanche's capital inflows were $334.5 million, while BNB Chain ranks further back on the list, with just $57.5 million.
The emergence of XRPL as a new frontrunner marks a significant change in the rapidly developing field of RWA tokenization. This section involves introducing real-world commodities and financial contracts into blockchain platforms in the form of digital tokens, and has become the focus of attention of traditional industry participants and blockchain innovators.
Why industrial companies choose XRPL
Industry experts attribute XRPL's advantages over Ethereum to differences in platform architecture. While Ethereum requires asset issuers to process variable gas bills and develop complex smart contracts, XRPL enables local tokenization of real-world assets through its built-in IOU mechanism. This approach reduces transaction fees to a fraction of a penny and shortens settlement times to between 3 and 5 seconds.
The decisive factor in XRPL's recent growth comes from the surge in activity among industrial participants, especially in the energy sector. Latin American company Justoken contributed most of the liquidity by launching tokenized power generation contracts (called JMWH) on the XRPL platform.
RWA.xyz's online data as of early October 2026 shows that XRPL's activity has increased sharply. Monthly RWA transfers increased more than 224 times to peak at US$7.03 billion. Representative total assets rose 56% to $4.52 billion in 30 days. The market value of XRPL's stablecoin climbed to US$1.25 billion, mainly due to the addition of RLUSD tokens, with monthly stablecoin trading volume reaching US$5.01 billion.
Compared to networks such as Ethereum, XRPL allows users to publish and transfer real-world assets at the protocol level, reducing costs and simplifying enterprise processes.
Micro Dictionary: IOU Mechanism -IOU (I Owe You, or "I Owe You") is a protocol-level feature on XRPL that allows users to issue tokens representing real-world assets (such as commodities or currencies) directly on the blockchain without the need for complex smart contracts.
Expansion beyond commodities
The influence of XRPL has gone beyond the commodities sector. Many well-known traditional institutions and blockchain projects have integrated with their infrastructure. These include Franklin Templeton, the world's leading investment management company, with a tokenized asset value of $48.3 million on XRPL;Ondo Finance, which deployed $187.5 million online; and Middle Eastern real estate company DAMAC, which is responsible for tokenizing ownership shares of Dubai properties such as Park Ridge Tower, Prive and J One.
Despite XRPL's success in tokenization of commodities and physical assets, Ethereum still maintains a strong global leader in overall RWA lockup value due to its reliance on tokenized U.S. government bonds. However, in the areas of physical goods and large asset classes, industrial capital is clearly moving towards XRPL technology backed by Ripple.
Although Ethereum has an advantage in tokenizing government bonds, XRPL has established itself as the preferred network for tokenization of industrial commodities and physical assets.
