XRP Ledger
XRP Ledger developers released version 3.4.1 of the server software on September 25, which aims to address security vulnerabilities and introduce fixBatchV1_2 amendments. Developers confirm that certain security fixes have not yet been released and plan to release their source code along with the technical review. Bones criticized the decision, arguing that undisclosed software changes could pose unnecessary security risks to network participants and investors. The amendment is expected to be activated on October 9 if verifiers provide sufficient support under the network's established voting requirements.
Selling XRP branded as "decentralized" to retail investors is complete fraud! XRP has been running closed source code for the past two weeks. Tomorrow, this code will become mandatory and anyone who disagrees will be kicked out of the chain! The list of licensed nodes means that verifiers must comply: Once activated, the amendment will prevent servers running incompatible software from keeping in sync with the XRP Ledger network. As a result, affected node operators must upgrade their software to comply with updated network rules.
Recommended verifier list criticized again
Bones also questioned XRP Ledger's unique NodeList model, which determines which validators each network participant trusts in the consensus process. Unlike Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work (PoW) mechanism, XRP Ledger relies on trusted verifiers to reach agreement on transaction verification. The Ripple and XRP Ledger Foundation publish lists of recommended validators that node operators can adopt through default configurations. Although anyone can operate an XRP Ledger validator, meaningful consensus participation depends on whether other operators include the validator. Official documents warn that poorly coordinated validator choices could cause individual nodes to diverge from the broader network. Bones believes that organizations that publish recommendation lists therefore exercise considerable influence in validator selection and network governance.
The decentralization debate transcends software transparency
Bones's allegations involve XRP Ledger's verifier trust arrangements and restrictions on unpublished security code, which have raised questions about the network's independence. At the same time, despite controversy over validator selection, software transparency, and the organizational impact of publishing a list of recommended validators, developers plan to release the retained code with technical details explaining security fixes introduced in the 3.4.1 release.
