StarkWare is evaluating whether the Ethereum Layer 2 network should be transformed into a stand-alone Layer 1. No transition plan has yet been approved; the road map remains a goal, not a completed upgrade. Safety issues have also become an important catalyst for short-term trading of STRK.

Ben-Sasson said the quantum threat "may be much closer than we think." He believes that advances in artificial intelligence in mathematics may shorten the timeline for developing a quantum computer capable of cracking wallet signatures. He did not claim that quantum computers could crack signatures today; researchers remain divided on when they would have the ability.
Ben-Sasson's "bunker model" requires appropriate cryptography, seamless upgrades, and possible independent L1. Starknet's STARK proof relies on a hash function that is believed to be quantum-resistant, but the roadmap still contains some elliptic curve components. As Ethereum L2, the network also relies on Ethereum's security and upgrade schedule. A 2027 goal does not mean that all components are protected.
StarkWare said it is actively considering a transition to L1 and has set 2027 as the goal of becoming the first quantum-resistant network. Ethereum's own public goal of achieving comprehensive L1 anti-quantum will be around the end of 2029. Both dates are set for goals, and the time difference between the two years forms the core of the debate. A separate L1 would give Starknet more control, but it would also mean that the network would be responsible for ensuring the security of transactions.
We are actively considering becoming an L1.
This would enable Starknet to become the first fully quantum-resistant network, with 2027 as our target.
