TRUMP Hunter Biden launches "LAPTOP" meme coin, TRUMP coin losers get airdrops
Hunter Biden, son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, announced that it will launch a meme coin called "LAPTOP" on Coinbase's Base network on September 9. The name comes from the laptops involved in the 2020 election controversy and plans to reserve one-fifth of the token supply for user wallets who have suffered losses on Donald Trump's "TRUMP" coins.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the plan on Monday morning. About four minutes later, Hunter Biden confirmed the matter on his certified X (formerly Twitter) account and posted a 31-second news clip about the laptop with the $LAPTOP transaction code and September 9 launch date marked next to it.
Trading volume surged within one hour of launch
According to the Wall Street Journal, the total supply of the token is 1 billion. The founding team, which includes Biden, holds a 30 percent share, and the tokens will be locked for six months and then phased out over about two years. Another 20% of the tokens will be airdropped in two rounds, including wallets that are losing money on "TRUMP" coins, Hunter Biden's Substack subscribers and mailing list users run by video journalist Andrew Callaghan.
Another 20% of the tokens will be used for liquidity provision, exchange listings and legal costs, and up to 30% of the tokens will be destroyed based on milestone events, such as Bitcoin (BTC) hitting a new high, the market value of "LAPTOP" exceeding the market value of "TRUMP", or the Democratic Party winning the 2028 presidential election.
Although the official contract will not be officially launched until Wednesday, this has not stopped speculation. Within about an hour after the Wall Street Journal report was released, more than a dozen counterfeit "LAPTOP" tokens appeared on multiple chains such as Solana, BNB Chain and TON, with a total transaction volume of approximately US$6.9 million. Since the official contract address has not yet been announced, these tokens are not officially certified.
According to data from Solidius Labs, Coinbase's Base network encountered more than 500 fraudulent tokens in its early launch in 2023. Blockchain investigator ZachXBT has previously traced cases of hijacked celebrity and brand accounts promoting fake tokens and transferring $3.5 million into anonymous wallets.
The laptop behind the token
This laptop is real. Hunter Biden left it at a repair shop in Wilmington, Delaware, in 2019, and the New York Post published it in October 2020, weeks before the presidential election. An FBI agent later testified in a 2024 federal trial that the device's serial number matched Apple records.
Hunter Biden disputed this statement, saying the documents were obtained from his cloud storage. The token is scheduled to be officially launched on the Base network on September 9.
Hunter Biden's "LAPTOP" memin had spawned a large number of counterfeit tokens before it went online on September 9. The project will use 20% of its supply for airdrops, including investors who have suffered losses on "TRUMP" coins.
