On April 1, 2021, Elon Musk issued a tweet that changed the development trajectory of dogcoin. The content was only four words: "SpaceX will send a physical dogcoin to the surface of the moon. "Most people think this is just an April Fool's Day joke. The space reporter for the Consumer News and Business Channel said he had no doubt Musk would actually do this. Musk later confirmed that this was a real plan, and the price of Dogecoin soared 32% in a few minutes.
On May 9, 2021, SpaceX officially announced that it had accepted dogcoin as a payment method for the DOGE-1 mission. The mission is a 40-kilogram cubic star designed to collect lunar space intelligence data, making it the first space mission in history funded entirely by cryptocurrency. After five years and four months and multiple delays, the satellite is finally scheduled to be launched on September 14, 2026-that is, 28 days later.
If US$1000 had been invested at that time, what would it be worth now?
There are two key time points around the DOGE-1 mission that determine the different destiny of investors. On April 1, 2021, when Musk first posted the tweet, he bought Dogecoin at a price of approximately US$0.058 each, and 17241 pieces could be purchased for US$1000. At the current price of $0.070, the investment is currently worth approximately $1207, with a return of 20.7%. But only if investors buy before prices soar 32% within minutes of the tweet and endure five years of price volatility, two bear markets and successive launch delays.
If SpaceX officially announced the purchase on May 9, 2021, each piece would be about US$0.44 at that time, and only 2273 pieces could be purchased for US$1000. At the current US$0.070, the investment is only worth about US$159, with a loss of 84%. The difference between the 20.7% gain and the 84% loss was just 38 days and a 32% price surge.
Possible impact of emissions
Historical data provide a reference point. The 2021 announcement triggered a 30% price surge. Dogecoin once approached US$0.60 in that rally, and then retreated sharply. The second catalyst-the actual launch rather than just the announcement-could trigger a similar reaction, or a "fact-selling" collapse. Both results have precedents in the cryptocurrency space.
There are currently two spot ETFs pegged to Dogecoin on the U.S. market: REX-Osprey's DOJE and 21Shares's TDOG, providing institutional investors with a regulated channel to participate in any launch driven rally. Announcement gave early buyers a 20.7% gain over five years, while formal confirmation gave latecomers a loss of 84%.
