ARK Invest sold approximately US$64 million in crypto assets on September 14, 2026

On September 14, 2026, when cryptocurrency-related stocks rose, ARK Invest reduced its holdings of some of its positions in Coinbase, Circle, Bitmine, Bullish and its own ARKB spot bitcoin ETF, involving an amount of approximately US$64 million. The operation is seen as disciplined profit-taking rather than a short exit, as the reduction in each position is only single-digit percentage.

Specific targets and amounts of reduction

Cathie Wood's funds disposed of crypto-related assets worth approximately US$64 million during the trading day on September 14. The reduction involves five targets: Coinbase (COIN), Circle, Bitmine, Bullish and ARKB (ARK's spot Bitcoin ETF).

These transactions are spread across three ARK ETFs: the flagship innovation fund ARKK, as well as ARKW and ARKF. No position was fully liquidated; the sale was only a partial reduction of the position rather than an exit from any single target.

According to unconfirmed sources citing The Block's data, Circle's holdings were close to $13.87 million, Coinbase was approximately $7 million, Bitmine was close to $3.96 million, while Bullish and ARKB's holdings made up the rest. However, these individual figures do not exactly match the total amount, and there was no official disclosure from ARK confirming the total amount at the time of release.

Why reduce positions during a market rise

The sale comes at a time when cryptocurrency-related stocks are climbing, which is consistent with Wood's usual documented practice of "taking advantage of strong times to reduce positions" to avoid excessive concentration. ARK does not provide public reasons for specific trading sessions; this interpretation is inferred based on its trading patterns.

It is even more meaningful when combined with the background of ARK's positions before the reduction: Coinbase's position at that time was close to US$609 million, Circle's position was approximately US$323 million, Bitmine's position was approximately US$275 million, and Bullish's position was approximately US$194 million. Compared with this base, the disposal of each position is only equivalent to a modest 3%-10% reduction, rather than a large-scale rotation of clearing the crypto sector.

ARK has been a net buyer of cryptocurrency assets for most of 2026. For example, in July 2026, it rotated within the sector, selling approximately $4.4 million on Bitmine, Block, Robinhood and Bullish, while adding approximately $43.5 million to Coinbase and Circle positions over three trading days, achieving a net increase in exposure to crypto. The sale this month only partially reversed the trend.

Signal significance for the crypto market

Bitcoin trading price is close to US$77,987, a single-day increase of 1.5%, and the Fear and Greed Index recorded 69, in a clear "greedy" range. This market heat usually prompts ARK to cut back on winner positions.

Compared with ARK's exposure to crypto stocks of more than US$1.4 billion on its four main targets, a sale of this scale is only a negligible adjustment and does not affect market liquidation. Institutional treasury turnover has been a recurring theme this year, similar to KULR's exit from its Bitcoin treasury, but ARK's rebalancing is far less dramatic.

For traders, this signal is mild. Wider institutional interest is still visible, reflected in flows to tokenized stocks, xStocks 'turnover on decentralized exchanges (DEX) exceeding $1 billion, and shifting allocation focus, such as Grayscale's adjustment of XRP weighting to 26% in its advisory model portfolio.

recommends paying attention to ARK's daily trading disclosures over the next 24 to 72 hours to confirm whether the September 14 reduction was a one-time event or the beginning of a continued reduction.
