Core Points
Citi raised its 12-month target price for Bitcoin to US$113,000.
The outflow of ETF funds interrupted the inflow momentum in September.
Standard Chartered Bank's target price is US$100,000 before December 2026.
What Citi's $113,000 target means for Bitcoin
According to a Reuters report on October 1, Citigroup raised its 12-month bitcoin price target from $82,000 to $113,000. The report noted that notes from September 30 mentioned stronger crypto activity, returning ETF inflows and a supportive macroeconomic background.
At approximately 12:23 UTC on October 1, the price of Bitcoin was close to US$84,000. Based on this rounded reference price, Citi's target means a price increase of about 35%. Its 12-month outlook period broadly extends to the fall of 2027.
The increase reverses a more cautious assessment earlier this year. In July, Citi lowered its assumptions for net ETF inflows over the next 12 months to zero. Now the return of demand gives the bank reason to rethink that outlook.
According to the latest report, Citi expects that capital inflows will gradually recover as advisers and brokers increase Bitcoin allocations. This configuration can spread purchases over different time periods, supporting progress towards Citi goals without triggering a sudden influx of markets. Fund data has shown a mixture of recovery and setbacks.
Bitcoin ETF attracts US$3.08 billion before buying reverses
According to Farside Investors, the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF recorded nine consecutive trading days of net inflows between September 17 and September 29. These trading days brought in approximately $3.08 billion in funds. However, on September 30, those funds reported a net outflow of $148.7 million.
The size of this outflow was much smaller than the previous inflow, leaving a large positive balance during this period. Still, it interrupted the buying streak. Although investor demand through such funds has improved, the latest completed data shows that investors are still willing to reduce exposure.
Net flow measures the value of funds entering the fund after deducting redemptions. Trading volume measures the share of hands changed. Two investors can trade existing ETF shares without the fund having to increase its Bitcoin holdings. As a result, net inflows can more clearly reflect the expansion of exposure through this channel, although they neither reveal the buyer's expected holding period nor guarantee price response.
Citi's comparison with other major Bitcoin targets
The following goals cover different periods. Their release dates are also important: Citi's increase is the latest, while Bernstein's data comes from August research, and Standard Chartered's year-end target was reiterated in a September report.
Bitcoin target, deadline and reporting date
- Institution: Citi
Report date: September 30
BTC target: $113,000
Deadline: 12 Months - Institution: Standard Chartered Bank (Standard Chartered)
Report Date: September 30
BTC Target: $100,000
Deadline: End of 2026 - Institution: Bernstein
Report Date: August 26
BTC target: $125,000
Deadline: Basic scenario, end of 2026 - Institution: Bernstein
Report date: August 26
BTC target: $150,000
Deadline: Basic scenario, mid-2027
Standard Chartered Bank and Bernstein provide the most direct comparison, as both give December estimates. Citi has set aside about nine additional months for its scenarios, so ranking alone by numerical size ignores differences in the speed of recovery that each institution expects.
Bernstein's logic is also different. Its basic scenario combines Bitcoin's historical cycle with valuations based on the cost of mining additional coins. This production cost estimate is a modeling input; it does not determine the price paid by the buyer.
The company also believes that pressure on government debt may increase demand for scarce assets as investors worry about declining purchasing power of money. This provides a reason to hold Bitcoin for the long term, but current bond market conditions may still inhibit buying intentions.
High yields remain an obstacle to recovery
Citi's favorable macro assessment is accompanied by immediate financing pressure. Reuters market commentary on October 1 pointed out that although August's inflation data was lower than expected, the yield on the 10-year Treasury bond has risen to more than 5.3%.
Higher yields make interest-paying investments more competitive. If financing costs also become more expensive, investors borrowing to buy cryptocurrencies may reduce their positions. Even if fiscal concerns support Bernstein's long-term argument, this could limit demand. In a high-yield environment, continued ETF buying will demonstrate that demand can withstand such pressures; bank price targets alone cannot establish such resilience.
Citi also raised its Ethereum target
The same Citi update raised its 12-month Ether price target from $2,240 to $3,028. For Ethereum readers, this seems more conservative than Arthur Hayes 'goal of $10,000 by the end of 2026.
As Coindoo reported on September 30, Hayes 'personal views are based on the size of Ethereum and its suitability for large investment positions. His forecast requires greater gains in a shorter period of time, which is a sharp gap between Citi's goal. This gap reflects different expectations for the speed of capital arrival rather than two estimates based on the same assumptions.
Observe whether the next correction brings continued outflows
The latest ETF reversal makes the next few weeks more informative than isolated jump price increases. Three observation points help assess whether the recovery in demand is sustained:
- Cumulative Weekly Traffic: Whether net subscriptions continue to exceed redemptions over several weeks.
- Traffic during price declines: Does weaker trading bring temporary outflows or is there a sustained sell-off through funds?
- Financing conditions: Whether borrowing costs alleviate or further put pressure on investors with new exposure.
Even if Bitcoin occasionally rebounds, repeated negative weekly traffic will weaken an important prerequisite for Citi's rating upgrade. Continued buying during periods of price decline enhances the likelihood of reaching the target.
