Treasury Secretary Bessent issued his latest statement on the CLARITY Act

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent once again emphasized his urgent concern about the CLARITY Act. In recent social media posts, he urged the Senate to agree to move forward with the motion and keep the parties at the negotiating table when it returns from recess. This move shows that the government has not backed down on this issue.

Besent warned that failure to push the bill through "will send a troubling signal to our allies and adversaries that the United States is unwilling to take a leadership role in the future development of digital assets." He also emphasized the national security dimension, noting that inaction means abandoning "enhanced national security tools to combat abuse."

In July, I called on the Senate to advance the CLARITY Act-legislation designed to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets and improve our ability to prevent bad actors from exploiting these critical technologies. Bessent's July comments

Bessent's new post is directly linked to his earlier statements in July. At the time, he asked the Senate to vote immediately on the CLARITY Act, calling it landmark legislation. He publicly criticized Democrats for blocking a bill that had been passed by the House and passed by the Banking and Agriculture Committees on their respective titles.

He also pointed to the contradiction of Democrats accepting millions of dollars in donations from the cryptocurrency industry while opposing legislation. He ended his July post with a quote from Satoshi Nakamoto. His September post sounded more restrained, but the message remained consistent: He wanted the Senate to take action.

This bill is critical to XRP holders and the broader encryption space. XRP has gained legal clarity through court decisions. Legislation will open more doors for the asset and the industry as a whole.

September 15 vote

The Senate closing debate vote is scheduled for September 15. This requires 60 votes to move forward. All 53 Republican senators have pledged to vote yes. Seven more Democratic votes are needed, and House Financial Services Committee Chairman French Hill believes Republicans can secure the votes needed.

What happens next?

Senator Cynthia Lummis clarified the stakes. If the bill fails during this Congress, the next realistic opportunity for market structure legislation will be 2030. The House's schedule adds additional pressure as lawmakers leave Washington by September 17. Any Senate amendment requires House approval, and no member will be present to provide approval. Still, securing votes is a major positive step.

Besent's post allowed the government to maintain visibility of its position ahead of Monday's vote. The bill's path is narrow. September 15 will determine whether the CLARITY Act will become law in this Congress or will be suspended for many years.
