Coinbase Wallet Branding and Entering the "Anytime, Anywhere" Trading Field, Competition in Robinh

Coinbase plans to rename the Base App to Coinbase Wallet

Coinbase plans to rename the Base App back to Coinbase Wallet, restoring the original name of the product. This rebranding marks a shift in product positioning as its focus shifts from its original "social first" strategy to cross-blockchain network transactions. For Ryan Kass, product leader of Coinbase Wallet, this renaming reflects that the application has transcended the Base single ecosystem and expanded into a multi-chain trading platform. The company believes that the familiar Coinbase Wallet name will better support its broader "all-purpose exchange" strategy.

Kass told Decrypt: "Returning to the name Coinbase Wallet means that users can access any asset, no matter what chain it is on, and no matter what its brand attributes in the crypto space."

Kass said that the launch of perpetual contracts on Hyperliquid, support for other crypto networks including Solana, and tokenized stocks across multiple chains reflect Coinbase Wallet's return to its original intention as a platform for quickly trading almost any asset anytime, anywhere-which has not weakened its support for the Base ecosystem.

"We don't want to limit the types of assets people can trade, we see users wanting to trade a wide variety of assets," Kass added.

The move comes approximately 14 months after Coinbase launched the Base App in Los Angeles in July 2025. At the time, Coinbase Wallet was renamed Base App, aiming to create a "super application" that combines cryptocurrency trading, Social networks, instant messaging, AI tools and creator monetization capabilities.

Returning to Coinbase Wallet's name also relaunches what the company calls its "experimental kitchen," where it introduces assets and experiences available outside of its flagship exchange.

Kass said: "On Coinbase Wallet, you can usually find new things quickly. We provide Robinhood chains, we provide Hyperliquid perpetual contracts, and many times, things that log on to Coinbase Wallet will end up on the Coinbase retail platform."

Although Coinbase and Robinhood are competing for customers, Kass said neither side can afford to exclude each other's ecosystems. He believes that providing a wide range of assets and letting users decide where to trade is the key to winning customer business. "Currently, Robinhood Chain is very popular, but Base Chain is extremely fast and has extremely low costs," he said."We believe that market hotspots rotate cyclically, and Coinbase Wallet is ready when money returns to Base Chain."

The shift towards trading a wider range of assets across multiple blockchains follows Coinbase's re-evaluation of Base App's social strategy. In July this year, Base founder Jesse Pollak resigned from his leadership role in the app and turned to focus on the development of the Base blockchain. He admitted that his push for social features and creator tokens failed to meet expected adoption rates.

However, social activities may still occupy a place in the product, but the wallet will follow user needs rather than prioritize a particular pattern.

Despite the name change, Kass said Coinbase remains committed to the Base ecosystem, and the wallet will continue to distribute the network's assets, communities and functions. "So the name Coinbase Wallet brings us back to our roots and means that this is the place where you can quickly trade any asset," he said.
