Swiss Bitcoin payment platform temporarily shuts down servers due to suspected internal system intrusion

Swiss Bitcoin Pay has temporarily shut down servers after suspected unauthorized hackers accessed its internal system. This incident may expose customers 'contact information, bank accounts and transaction information to the risk of disclosure.

The platform disclosed the security breach on September 14 and said user funds remained secure while investigating access rights and strengthening infrastructure. As of now, the company has not announced the specific time for service restoration.

Scope of potentially compromised data

Sensitive information that may be affected includes customer email addresses, Bitcoin addresses, international bank account numbers (IBAN), transaction history, and hashed passwords. The investigation has not yet determined whether other types of information were accessed.

The Swiss Bitcoin payment platform did not disclose the approximate number of affected accounts, the start time of unauthorized access, nor did it confirm whether the data had been copied to external systems. In addition, the company has not yet clarified the route of intrusion or the party responsible, and the root cause at the technical level is still under investigation.

The combination of email addresses, transaction records, and financial identifiers could allow attackers to obtain detailed information that could enable targeted identity impersonation or phishing attacks. Previously, Trezor had a customer data breach involving the contact and shipment records of tens of thousands of hardware wallet buyers, raising similar security concerns.

Operating Mechanism of Untrusteeship Payment Model

The Swiss Bitcoin payment platform mainly provides merchant payment services and supports Bitcoin transactions through Lightning and on-chain payments. Its merchant systems are designed to transfer received bitcoins directly to wallets controlled by customers, rather than having the company keep assets for long periods of time.

Merchants can accept payments through mobile apps, web dashboards, e-commerce integrated interfaces and APIs. In addition, for customers who use bank transfers to withdraw legal currency, the platform also supports automatic conversion of received bitcoins into legal currency. This process requires customers to provide bank information such as IBAN.

In a statement, the company emphasized that suspected system access incidents were separated from the custody of customer funds and reiterated that funds remained safe. At present, no evidence of unauthorized transfer of Bitcoin has been found, nor has the specific amount of losses related to this intrusion been confirmed.

Servers remain offline during security review

For precautionary reasons, the Swiss Bitcoin payment platform chose to completely offline its infrastructure rather than continue to operate while the scope of access is unclear. The company has not yet released a technical root cause analysis, a repair timetable or a plan to restart services in phases.

This disclosure follows other customer data security cases in the crypto industry, such as the recent SafePal breach involving 39,798 customer orders. SafePal attributed the isolated incident to an authorization flaw in the order-tracking plugin, while the Swiss bitcoin payment platform has yet to attribute its suspected breach to a specific application, dependency or vulnerability.

Currently, the Swiss Bitcoin payment platform is still offline and there is no re-opening date. The company promises to refund the full amount currently owed to users while strengthening the affected infrastructure.
