Investor.gov

Prices rise when buyers are willing to pay more than sellers have previously accepted. This can be caused by a variety of factors:

  • improved earnings expectations;
  • lower interest rates or Treasury yields;
  • greater risk-taking by investors;
  • increased allocation by institutional funds;
  • forced short positions;
  • improved liquidity. [TAG

In a recent example, falling oil prices and lower yields have pushed the S & P 500 and Dow higher. This does not require investors to inject money equal to the overall market cap growth. Buyers are just starting to show greater willingness to buy at higher prices.
