Evernorth Chief Operating Officer: Tokenization may break the deadlock in Japan's XRP adoption
Japanese financial institutions have shown continued optimism about the long-term potential of XRP, but Meg Nakamura, chief operating officer of Evernorth, a well-known blockchain infrastructure company, pointed out that adoption at the institutional level is still constrained by a self-reinforcing hesitation. At the WebX Asia 2026 conference in Tokyo, Megumi Nakamura revealed the dilemma of "chicken or egg" faced by Japan's financial sector when participating in XRP.
Institutions hesitate to block XRP adoption
Megumi Nakamura observes that more and more banks and financial companies in Japan recognize the practical value of blockchain in the financial sector. However, few institutions are prepared to make major commitments to XRP because they prefer to see broad industry participation before investing heavily on their own. She explained that this dynamic has led to a cycle: companies are reluctant to be early adopters and instead wait to confirm that major peers have accepted the asset before acting.
According to Nakamura's analysis, this model reflects the core characteristics of Japan's financial culture-emphasizing compliance supervision, operational resilience and long-term risk management, rather than pursuing the dividends of first-mover advantage. She pointed out that Japanese institutions tend to validate new technologies through limited pilot projects and strategic cooperation rather than large-scale deployment from the outset.
"Institutions want to see that their peers have taken substantial steps before they follow suit," explained Katsuya Nakamura, highlighting the self-reinforcing cycle that hinders full market adoption. Agencies are paying close attention to this area, opting for limited pilots rather than leading extensive blockchain deployments in order to seek verification and regulatory clarity.
Japan's financial industry shifts to tokenization
Although the potential of XRP remains the focus, Katsuya Nakamura pointed out that industry attention has turned to tokenization-the process of recording real-world assets in digital tokens and trading them on a blockchain network. She said that tokenization is increasingly seen as a transformative opportunity to modernize capital markets, expanding the application of blockchain beyond digital payments and stablecoin transactions to a wider range of fields.
Tokenization allows assets such as government bonds, stocks, real estate, private equity, commodities, and investment funds to be represented as tradable digital tokens. This approach can simplify the settlement process, reduce operating costs, release liquidity, and expand access to previously inaccessible investment opportunities.
(Small Dictionary: Tokenization refers to the conversion of the ownership of real-world or financial assets into digital tokens on the blockchain. This process allows partial ownership of multiple assets, improves settlement efficiency, and improves market access.)
Regulation and infrastructure shape the future
Megumi Nakamura emphasized that for Japanese financial companies, tokenization is not only seen as another use case in the crypto space, but also seen as the next major evolution of capital market infrastructure. In this context, blockchain platforms such as XRP Ledger are expected to become an infrastructure for large-scale issuance, transfer and settlement of tokenized institutional assets.
Megumi Nakamura pointed out that regulatory clarity is rapidly changing from a constraint to a catalyst for financial product development. A transparent legal framework gives companies more confidence in building blockchain-based services while complying with legal standards, greatly simplifying the adoption process.
Japan currently has one of the most advanced digital asset regulatory environments in the world. Analysts said this provides a solid foundation for the tokenization plan to move forward. As tokenization becomes widely adopted and legal requirements become clearer, Japan's initial hesitation about XRP may dissipate, paving the way for broader institutional consolidation and financial innovation.
Megumi Nakamura believes that as awareness increases and the regulatory environment continues to mature, Japan's cautious attitude towards XRP and blockchain applications may give way to greater participation, which indicates that the country's financial landscape may usher in a transformation.
