The network resists coordinated Wasm attacks, and the system remains stable
According to the founder, Internet Computer successfully defended a coordinated, artificial intelligence-driven network attack. The attack involved hundreds of canisters that deployed malformed WebAssembly (Wasm) modules in an attempt to disrupt network operations. "Last night, the Internet computer network defended a massive, AI-driven attack that used hundreds of containers loaded with malformed Wasm modules," the founder said.
A container is a smart contract format native to Internet computers. It is essentially a collection of Wasm code and memory used to store and execute applications on the network. The attacker used the malformed Wasm module as an attack vector to directly target this core layer of the ICP infrastructure.
This attack was not an isolated incident. Allegedly, the attack was accompanied by a large-scale, automated disinformation campaign on social media aimed at shaking confidence in the Internet at critical moments. Since then, the foundation announced that anyone who can provide clues and identify the organizers of the crime can receive a cash reward.
Attack timing coincides with the release of cloud engines and intelligent gateways
The timing of the attack is noteworthy. On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the launch of the Internet's main network in May this year, the founder of the foundation released "Cloud Engines"-a sovereign cloud framework designed to promote the Internet to enter the AI agent field more deeply. The longer-term goal points to the "Internet Intelligence Gateway", which the foundation sees as a path to verifiable AI reasoning on the chain. These two products seem to be the specific targets that false information propaganda is trying to undermine.
The foundation plans to launch the "cloud engine" as a configurable private subnet to serve enterprise and AI workloads, and launch a promotion in the summer of 2026 to provide a two-week free trial to lower the adoption threshold. The product has attracted widespread attention, and its cloud engine plan and AI and cloud strategy have brought a new narrative to the token and attracted focused market coverage.
The network successfully withstood the attack without reporting a service outage, which is likely to be seen as a positive sign by developers and corporate customers who are evaluating ICP's resilience ahead of the launch of the cloud engine. The foundation decided to publicly pursue those responsible, including providing cash rewards to whistleblowers, indicating that it believed the incident was serious enough to respond strongly.
