Ripple lays out an anti-quantum computing roadmap for XRP Ledger, aiming to complete a comprehensive transition by 2028.
Ripple is preparing XRP Ledger to respond to potential quantum computing threats and has developed a four-stage roadmap with the goal of achieving comprehensive post-quantum transition preparations by 2028. The plan treats current quantum computing threats as future risks rather than attacks that have occurred.
The plan, released by Ripple on April 20, 2026, comes at a time when the industry is increasingly focusing on "Q-Day"-a point in time when a hypothetical quantum computer powerful enough could crack the elliptic curve cryptography that protects most blockchains. Ripple's message is preventive: start migrating years before threats become a reality, rather than waiting until they occur.
Why quantum computing is critical to XRP Ledger
The security of blockchain accounts relies on public key cryptography and digital signatures. Every XRPL transaction needs to be authorized by a signature that proves control of the account's private key. Current elliptic curve schemes are considered safe because it is computationally infeasible for classical computers to reverse crack them.
A large-scale quantum computer will change this mathematical foundation. Ripple said that every signed XRPL transaction will publish its public key on the chain, creating long-term exposure to risks. Because if quantum attacks on elliptic curve cryptography become feasible in the future, these exposed keys could become fragile.
Although the threat is not yet imminent, the time window is shrinking. According to research estimates on March 31, 2026, under favorable assumptions, cracking ECDLP-256 may require less than 1200 logic qubits, 90 million Toffoli gates, and less than 500,000 physical qubits. This number is more accurate than many earlier predictions.
Therefore, even if there is no immediate attack, proactive preparation is crucial: keys that are now exposed on the chain will be permanently visible, and the industry cannot wait for attacks to emerge before strengthening cryptographic protection.
How Ripple builds the XRP Ledger defense system
Ripple's roadmap is divided into four phases: starting with the Q-Day recovery emergency plan and the cryptographic agility layer, gradually advancing to post-quantum transaction support, and finally adopting a network upgrade proposal to enable post-quantum signatures in the production environment. The target time for comprehensive transition preparations is 2028.
During the cryptographic agility phase, Ripple plans to test post-quantum algorithms that comply with NIST standards, allowing ledgers to flexibly change signature schemes without having to restructure accounts. This design leverages XRPL's existing capabilities: accounts can assign or change regular keys without changing the account itself, making key rotation possible without a complete address migration.
Ripple believes that native key rotation and signer control mechanisms make migration more feasible than a complete address reset on other networks. Instead of forcing each holder to transfer funds to a new address, XRPL can rotate accounts to quantum-resistant keys in situ.
This transition will not be accomplished overnight. Ripple plans to have the validator coordinate the switch during the transition period when old and new security solutions run in parallel. Ripple cryptographers say the goal is not to wait until quantum computing becomes an imminent threat before acting.
What this means for XRP users and the broader market
For most holders, the practical significance is that no action is currently needed, but as the roadmap moves into production, wallets or keys may need to be updated in the future. The migration will be designed with key rotation rather than mandatory funds transfers, which should minimize the impact on exchanges and custodians.
A credible quantum readiness plan also carries reputation value. As Ripple continues to expand its ecosystem through initiatives such as supporting RLUSD credit funds and issuing $275 million in senior notes to drive major brokerage businesses, the demonstrated security posture supports the institutional trust on which these products rely.
The market environment remains stable rather than panic. XRP was trading at about $1.38, down about 2.7% in 24 hours, and its market value was close to $86.8 billion, while broader market sentiment was in the "greedy" range, with a Fear and Greed Index of 68. The token's recent strong performance suggests that the quantum roadmap is viewed as long-term risk management rather than short-term warnings.
Ripple is not alone. Bitcoin and Ethereum also released their respective migration plans the same week, which collectively point to an industry that is coordinating actions, viewing post-quantum cryptography as an engineering deadline that needs planning rather than a distant abstraction.
