Bitget's stolen funds are transferred across the chain through THORChain, triggering a dispute over the responsibility of the decentralized agreement.

Although all parties are still trying to track the flow of stolen funds in the Bitget security incident, it has been reported that attackers have begun to transfer some assets across the chain through THORChain. SlowMist's on-chain tracking platform MistTrack pointed out that the funds were used for exchange and cross-chain bridge transactions conducted through THORChain.

MistTrack has previously pointed out that in the attack on Bybit, most of the approximately US$1.2 billion in stolen funds was also transferred between different chains through THORChain. The platform said addresses associated with the Bitget attack have been made public within the industry and are being actively monitored.

MistTrack believes that funds from known large-scale attacks can still be processed through large-scale cross-chain transactions, triggering a new debate about the responsibilities of decentralized protocols. The platform emphasized that the principle of "decentralization" should not be an automatic excuse to deal with known stolen funds and that the industry needs to extensively discuss the responsibilities of agreements such as THORChain in such circumstances.

Following the announcement, Bitget CEO Gracy Chen said that addresses associated with the attackers had been publicly shared and were still under continuous monitoring, and issued a formal appeal to THORChain asking the agreement to reject transactions from those addresses. Chen Yuqing pointed out that decentralization is a design principle, but should not be regarded as "a talisman to assist in the transfer of stolen funds from known sources."

Faced with criticism, THORChain responded that the protocol operates in a decentralized and permission-free manner, similar to the operating model of Bitcoin, Ethereum and BNB Chain. Although regretting the attack on Bitget, the team asked: "How much responsibility should Bitcoin, Ethereum and BNB Chain bear when handling known stolen funds?"
