Robinhood deepens active trading layout: launches permanent contracts and weekend stock trading
On September 29, at the HOOD Summit conference in Houston, Robinhood announced two major initiatives aimed at further deepening the active trading market: one is to launch Perpetual Futures for eligible U.S. clients, and the other is to provide round-the-clock, including weekend trading services for some U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
Cryptocurrency permanent contracts officially launched on the U.S. market
In the next few months, eligible U.S. users will be able to place long or short positions on their assets, including BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, DOGE, ADA, LINK and HYPE. These permanent contracts have no expiration date limit.
In terms of specific leverage settings, Robinhood will provide up to 10 times leverage for permanent contracts of BTC and ETH, while other contracts will provide 3 times leverage. The permanent contract service is backed by Bitstamp and charges a 0.01% fee per transaction before the end of the year.
Traders can use stop loss and take profit orders to monitor clearing prices in real time and receive alerts when positions are at risk. CEO Vlad Tenev calls it "the first truly permanent contract in the United States" and its profit and loss settlement cycle is every 15 minutes.
By allowing traders to leverage long or short without setting an expiration date, permanent contracts have become one of the leading trading products in the cryptocurrency field. However, due to regulatory constraints, such products have long been mainly associated with offshore exchanges and have been difficult to open to U.S. retail investors. Earlier this year, Robinhood's Bitstamp was the first to launch cryptocurrency permanent contracts for eligible EU traders, providing a channel in a regulated environment to participate in trading crypto-asset price fluctuations without having to hold the underlying asset.
Weekend stock trading pending regulatory approval
Currently, Robinhood plans to launch a stock weekend trading service that allows clients to trade selected stocks and ETFs over the weekend, further extending existing trading hours from 8 pm Sunday (EST) to 8 pm Friday.
Implementation of this feature relies on routing orders to a trading platform operated by Bruce Markets. Early weekend trading will cover a carefully screened list of stocks and ETFs across all account types and be supported by Bruce ATS. Bruce ATS is an institutional-level alternative trading system with strong liquidity, robustness and execution quality.
