Hyperliquid CEO says Wall Street's wealth model excludes retail investors

Core Points

Hyperliquid co-founder and CEO Jeff Yan said in a fireside talk at the Token2049 conference in Singapore that Wall Street's traditional wealth creation model is unsustainable for most participants.

Yan pointed out that retail investors are often excluded from the strongest periods of asset growth because many assets are often traded among a few insiders before being made available to the public. He emphasized that Hyperliquid's mission is to expand participation in wealth creation and penetration of the financial system, treating income as a secondary outcome rather than a primary goal.

Why retail investors missed the biggest gain

Yan believes that the structure of traditional markets isolates retail investors from the growth period when their assets are most valuable. "During most growth periods, certain assets are traded by only a few people," Yan said, citing the company's pre-IPO period as an example. He pointed out that by the time stocks enter the public market through initial public offerings, most of the value creation already belongs to early, privileged minorities.

This view positions Hyperliquid's model as an alternative. Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange for trading perpetual contracts, designed to provide a path to revenue for most participants who are excluded from Wall Street structures. Since its launch, Hyperliquid (HYPE) has risen rapidly, with a team size of about ten people and has not received any venture capital support.

Hyperliquid's stated mission and revenue reality

Yan said that Hyperliquid's core mission is to expand access opportunities for wealth creation, promote broader financial system participation, and make ratings a secondary consideration rather than direct platform optimization. He has made similar remarks at past industry events, saying he is committed to building infrastructure similar to the basic "pipeline" of financial markets, rather than a product designed mainly to maximize costs.
