Key facts
According to chain analyst Khal, Tether blacklisted four of THORChain's six Tron vaults on Friday, freezing approximately 1.45 million USDTs. Since then, THORChain has suspended trading, signature and liquidity operations on the Tron network. Developer Chad Barraford called the move unprecedented in the industry.
Tether resumes trading after a brief freeze
Barraford said late Friday that Tether appeared to have lifted its freeze on addresses and trading was about to resume. Previously, Tether implemented blacklist measures on the TRON (TRX) network against Tether USDt (USDT) vaults held in the cross-chain agreement THORChain (RUNE). The incident forced THORChain to suspend related operations on the Tron network, highlighting how the blacklist mechanism of stablecoin issuers may lock in funds in cross-chain swap agreements.
Barraford wrote on platform X: "It appears that USDT chose to blacklist THORChain's treasury on the TRON blockchain. This is unprecedented in our industry and raises questions about the security of this asset in all DeFi protocols." He added that THORChain had no communication with Tether before the freeze occurred and hoped the action was "based on error/misunderstanding."
Around 15:35 pm Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), Barraford released a message saying that Tether appeared to have unfrozen THORChain's address and that transactions were about to resume. As of press time, Tether has not publicly commented on the freeze on its X account.
Analysts believe THORChain treasury may be "collateral damage"
On-chain data reveals partial freezing. Khal pointed out that in one block, four of THORChain's six Tron vaults were blacklisted by the USDT. These four vaults hold approximately 93% of the USDTs of the agreement on the Tron network, totaling approximately 1.45 million.
About 27 minutes later, THORChain suspended transactions, signatures and liquidity provider operations on the Tron network, according to Khal. He pointed out that blacklisted addresses can still receive USDT, but cannot send it. At that time, about 363,000 USDT payment instructions were queued, mainly concentrated in frozen vaults.
Khal wrote: "I don't think THORChain was even the target of this operation." He added that the vaults were blacklisted within the same three-block window, along with about 30 other wallets that were also listed. He believes the freeze "looks like collateral damage rather than intentional."
This week, Tether's freezing was also subject to scrutiny in other areas. Payments company Conduit is suing Tether over the freezing of a wallet holding $2.76 million USDT. In addition, blockchain security company MistTrack said on Friday that Tether is freezing USDTs at multiple addresses related to Ledger reseller wallet theft incidents.
